Mountain City, Tennessee is buried under a thick blanket of morning fog in this stunning early-morning shot taken from Johnson County High School.

The scene captures one the most striking natural phenomena — valley fog that settles overnight as cooler, denser air drains into the lower elevations, filling the hollows and valleys while the surrounding ridges and hilltops emerge above the mist. On mornings like this, entire communities disappear beneath the clouds while the world above stays clear.

June is a prime time for fog like this across the mountains. Overnight lows have been dropping enough to allow moisture-laden air to condense in the valleys, creating these dramatic low-lying fog banks. By mid-morning, as temperatures rise, the fog lifts and burns off — but for a few quiet hours at sunrise, scenes like this one make the mountains feel like something out of a painting.

Johnson County High School sits on elevated ground with a sweeping view of the valley below — a perfect vantage point to watch Mountain City wake up beneath its morning fog blanket.
