I find purpose in providing habitat.
This year I planted hundreds of flowers and seeing the butterflies, native bees and hummingbirds enjoy this blooming landscape gives me a sense of peace in a world full of maddening news.
While my grief about wars, AI data centers and extractive empire is also present and I am actively participating to make a difference there, I know I can make a difference here now by taking care of all my relations and recognizing that their home isn’t a house, their food can’t be found in a supermarket or fridge.
We as land stewards have to recognize that we are visiting their home and eating at their table. Good guests bring gifts and flowers.

One of the biggest swarms I have ever witnessed… Celebrating the intelligence of nature, the sacredness of every being, the process of life through the unique expressions of every species.
Us humans being the stewards and protectors of life. Honoring their ways and caring for their homes means honoring ourselves.
To all our relations, motivation for creation!

Right now is the time to really feel into our planet. To really sit with our mother Earth. Just sit by her Waters and pray to the Waters. To walk gently and with awareness, take deep breaths, and love the air and the trees and plants. To feel the soil, the crystals, the ancient minerals, the microbial, fungal life beneath our feet and burst into gratitude and reverence for this earth.
Pray for all our relations to experience peace. Sit with your loved ones by the fires, tend to your sacred fire within. What is it that we are feeding with our flames of thought and creativity? What is it that needs to be transformed so that it is in alignment? When and how do we need to take a stand against the extractive empire? The laws of nature will guide us.
Technology is not a safe place. We need to come back to our earth.

The ice and snow has finally melted and the bees are out and about again, bringing in the first loads of pollen.
I am very pleased with the results of the condensed hive method. The newest research is showing that insulating hives is much more beneficial and effective for the bees wellbeing than a ventilated hive.
Of course, because it mimics their natural habitat within a hollow space in a tree. The bees can regulate the hive temperature much more effectively, they use less energy and resources and start rearing brood sooner.
The concept is to insulate the top of the hive with a very high r-value material and the sides with a smaller r-value layer.
I have been using an empty box filled with layers of foam insulation to create a deep layer of insulation on the top. This year I also tried the system and I really enjoy the design, simplicity and durability.
I can see the bees are so much happier and comfortable especially during these extremely cold nights.

A constant reminder: Unplug from technology and spend more time with nature.
Time is a precious gift. Does the screen warrant my attention?

First time making biochar here at the Crystal Garden. Our amazing volunteer Alexander took the lead on creating this easy to make soil amendment.
By creating this type of charcoal, the wood gets so porous and fractured that it’s an optimal substrate to then be inoculated with fertilizers like compost tea, urine, etc. and soil bacteria.
Applied to the garden after inoculation, it can function as a long-term slow-release nutrient deposit. The bio char becomes a tiny apartment complex for millions of little microbes, bacteria, and fungi.

Companion planting is a great gardening technique. What goes well together in the kitchen usually goes well together in the field. Here we have cucumbers and dill. Other good examples are tomatoes and basil, and beans and savory.
The aromatics of herbs can deter pests and increase flavor profiles of their companions.
Diversity is a key concept of a successful organic garden.
