August Spotlight Artist 🌿

There’s something special about pottery that begs to be used.

This month we’re thrilled to welcome Margaret Seidenberg-Ellis as our August Spotlight Artist. Margaret creates hand-built ceramics inspired by the contrasts, textures, and quiet beauty she finds in nature. Each piece begins as slabs of clay and is finished with expressive slips and glazes that give every vessel its own personality and movement.

From sculptural flower vessels and hand-thrown cups to whimsical wall flowers and beautiful serving pieces, her work is both functional and artful—the kind of pieces that become part of everyday rituals.

We’ve styled the collection throughout the Mercantile with fresh flowers to show how these pieces come alive in the home. We hope you’ll stop in, wander the display, and find a favorite of your own.

NEW CLASS ALERT Sunday, August 9th - you won't want to miss this one!

Join us for a peaceful afternoon exploring the timeless Japanese art of Ikebana—the practice of creating simple, expressive floral arrangements that celebrate balance, nature, and the beauty of less. With little effort or expense, a few stems in a small vase can offer a moment of reflective beauty and deepen your connection with nature.

Ikebana has been part of Japanese culture since the 6th Century, established within Buddhism and the Shinto religions. In modern day Japan, there are over 2,000 schools of Ikebana each with a core group of rules governing the arranger and arrangement, as such, some schools are more traditional than others. The Sogetsu school, established in 1930, offers much flexibility regarding materials and how they are displayed. Its philosophy is beautifully simple: Anyone. Any Material. Any Place. Any Time. In this class, we will explore a small free-style Sogetsu arrangement.

Whether you're a seasoned gardener, flower lover, or simply curious to try something new, this class is designed for beginners and welcomes all experience levels.

​What's included: a vase, fresh plant materials, and guided instruction by the one and only Heather Jones. ​Please bring a pair of small garden snips or fine floral scissors.

📚 An Afternoon with Local Author Larry McKenna

Join us at MG Mercantile for a celebratory afternoon with local author Larry McKenna as he shares his first novel, A Church, a Newspaper and a Bar.

After the reading, Larry will talk about the inspiration behind the story, answer audience questions, and sign copies of his book.

Big news from MG Mercantile ✨

Hello! I’m Dayna Bernard, and I’m so grateful (and excited!) to share that I’m the new owner of the Mercantile. 🎨

After starting here in 2025, I quickly realized just how special this little shop is—and knew I wanted to be part of its future. A heartfelt thank you to Tanya for trusting me with something she’s built so beautifully and that this community already loves so much. 🧚

My goal is to honor everything that makes MG Mercantile so special while thoughtfully adding my own touch—bringing in a bit more vintage and whimsy alongside the curated goods, groceries, and gifts you know and love. 🌻🎨🍸🎁

We’ve been busy behind the scenes getting everything ready, and I can’t wait to welcome back familiar faces and meet new ones, too. 👷🏼‍♀️
