I am so drawn to trees with bare branches in the winter. So much is revealed now, that was previously hidden by a lush coat of foliage.
We can learn to read their story: We see the true forms, branching structures of the trees, the scars that tell of their history, or listen to their quiet wisdom...

I've written a blog post about how to see winter trees, what to notice, and how to start a conversation with trees in your nature journal.

Share TREE in the comments and I'll send you the link!

A wander in the woods.
Smell of redwoods, birdsong melodies in the air.
Sunlight streaming through a cathedral of tall trunks.
A field of clover, stems bobbing in the gentle breeze.

I'm led to a circle of redwood trees, and invited in
I sit on the soft bed of needles surrounded by trees.
Here, I feel so calm, held in the softness of this space.
I long to linger here, but the sun is sinking lower on the horizon.

I scribble the things that spark my attention and jot down what I'm noticing.

A moment captured on the page,
And in my memory and heart.

Have you ever been drawn to a particular place and longed to linger too?
Were you able to stop for a moment and take it in? Let me know what it was like.

I'd love to hear if you'd like to share.

The woods called me today. I could hear the mushrooms. It’s time for my favorite candy cap fungus to push up its fruits.

The best part of foraging is breathing the fresh air, smelling the soil when I bend down to gather, hearing the birds chirp, settling my nervous system.

I’ve been keeping things low key- it’s winter and I need to stillness.

I haven’t been in the mood to nature journal much- although I’ve been soaking in nature with my senses and heart…

Today I was inspired to celebrate this good bounty….

Thank dear Lactarius, for the gift of your fruit. I look forward to drying them , and among something delicious with the maple syrup aroma-ed mushrooms!

What is feeling your soul this winter?

If you’re in a season of transition, rest, or open-ended questions… my new blog post might speak to you.

I wrote about welcoming curiosity and trusting the unfolding—on the page and in life. How sitting with 'not-knowing' for now creates spaciousness for new insights to blossom.

Its something I teach in my work, and recently it showed up as another lesson for me personally. Another way allow nature to guide me into living a more aligned life.

Comment OPEN and I’ll DM it to you. 🌼

Nature is showing off gorgeous hues right now! These tress stopped me in my tracks in the grocery store shopping lot- the light streaming through leaves, the red orange and yellow makes the tree appear burnt.

These Chinese pistache trees are planted as ornamentals in parking lots, neighborhoods, along the freeway interchange— and the firey pops of color always make me smile. Looks so delicious wish I could eat the colors!

Take a look around - what’s happening in your nearby nature that’s going unnoticed?

Stop and take it in.
How does it make you feel?
Scribble this into your journal.

Have you tried drawing shadows?

I got myself a bouquet of flowers from the grocery store. The colors and textures were so amazing- if this was a food I’d want to eat it while savoring each bite.
I decided this needed to go into my nature journal— the flowers wanted to be free flowing so I did a reverse watercolor- splashes of color in loose blobs At first. The in a few minutes added a layer of color pencil texture- then the words around the outer edge of the page.

These brought me back to my past- when I was a floral designer in my family run flower shop….. it put a big smile on my face.

Get yourself a small gift- maybe some flowers from the garden or store- and take time noticing them deeper through sketching or painting… with the intention of seeing and feeling rather than for perfect painting.

What do the flowers remind you of? What do they reveal about your day or yourself?

Grab your journal and scribble along with me! Comment SPARK to get a link for my next live session where we can journal together!

A few photos from our trip to Athens, Greece right before my nature journaling retreat in October.

Even in a big city there’s a lot of nature around. But if you think more about it, people are nature- so is the food we eat, and the landscapes and marble carved eons ago.

All this experience goes in my nature journal. I see it all as ONE. And I spend more time scribbling notes about exploring and marveling at the ancient ruins and the culture and the cats!

Stay tuned for more from Greece!

Harvested some hummingbird sage leaves and lavender- smells heavenly! Scent is one of the senses that have the strongest memory — this brings me back to cozy days drinking fresh tea with these leaves.
