I went down a rabbit hole learning about bees. 🐝

Here are a few things I learned…

🌼 Washington State is home to roughly 700 native bee species.

🌼They make their homes in dug out tunnels in the ground or vegetation.

🌼 Native bees live a solitary life, with no hive or colony.

🌼They are rarely aggressive because they do not have to protect a hive, queen, or honey.

🌼They do not produce enough honey to harvest or any at all.

🌼Bubble bees produce a small amount of honey, but not enough to harvest.

🌼Honey bees are not native to North America, they were brought here in 1622 and made it to WA-State in the 1850’s.

🌼Native bees make better pollinators than Honey Bees for crops but the issue lies in sheer numbers and transporting them from crop to crop as they do not colonize.

🌼Native bees have evolved with North American produce. For example the Squash Bee wakes up at dawn when the pumpkin and zucchini blossoms have opened, pollinating them before the honey bees has emerged.

🌼 Native species are capable of unpacking tightly packed pollen in blueberry, pepper, tomatoes and cranberry flowers using the “buzz pollination” a technique in which they vibrate their flight muscles, something that the honey bees is incapable of doing.
