St. Patrick, the man whose name is synonymous with Irish celebrations, ironically, was one of the driving forces behind eradicating so many of Irelands Celtic traditions.
The 'snake' that St. Patrick is credited for having driven out of Ireland is the symbolic totem of the Divine Feminine. It was not the actual snake that was driven out of Ireland, rather was it nature based forms of worship and Goddess spirituality that St. Patrick drove out in his quest to convert the country to Christianity. The shamrock which is worn with pride on this day was a power plant of the Druids which was converted into a metaphor for the Holy Trinity, the symbol of the faith that tore through the Irish countryside. While true Christianity in it’s essence is a beautiful faith, what has been done in the name of Christianity is horrifying. Women burnt at the stake, lives and sacred rites killed in the name of a faith that at it's soul preaches life for all, yet has been cruelly twisted into a power hungry tool for churches and state.
During today's festivities take some time to reflect upon the ways that society has attempted to shield you from feeling your outrage and deceived you into trite merriment in celebration of patriarchal and ruthless religions. Rather than rage and sorrow for the lives lost during the Burning Times you are given trite holidays to celebrate. How insulting and disgusting that the day put aside to celebrate such a beautiful country, such rich heritage and such deep beliefs was done in the name of a man who represented a faith that strived not to empower Ireland in it’s worshipping diversity but to control the Irish's right to worship in the manner that made best sense to each individual. For today, take some time to remember the many who have died in a pursuit to live their faith in the way that makes the most sense to them.
And then be done with it.
Once you have raged against the machine, have reclaimed your truth and have seen behind the illusion that was drawn up to keep the masses happily dumb YOU get to rewrite what today means. Perhaps it will be any other day for you and the odd necessity to celebrate will be overlooked, and that is fine and good.
Perhaps you will take the energies of this day and recommit it to a true worship of the Divine wisdom that lies within Irish soil, blood and tradition. How can you honour the green grasses of Ireland? Through giving thanks to Mother Gaia for all of Her lush gifts to us we connect to the frequency of green, of life, of the universal love within the heart chakra.
Perhaps we honour the Irish Goddess Archetypes and teach our daughters and sons about their expressions of that One Source on this planet, we teach them about how Arianrhod is honoured at the full moon and reminds us of the Almighty’s mother nature in our lives, we teach them about how Blodeuwedd exemplifies the presence of beauty within the Maiden archetype and gives life to the flowers that bloom each spring that dawns, we teach them about Branwen as the expression of the Divine’s sweet love for us and the power of beauty in our lives, we teach them about Brigid and the power of transmutative fire and how She reflects the transmutative power of the Cosmic Being back to us, we teach them about Cerridwen and the mysteries that death holds within it, the afterlife and all of the ways that the One carries us through completions and past the veil of one realm to another, the list goes on and on. As you choose to call these Goddess reflections of Source back into your life, and back into your home the old ways of removal and suppression fade away as our new era continues to rise up, a phoenix from the ashes. St.Patrick’s day becomes Green Day or Ireland’s Day and the power and the mystery that the Irish region held is reborn into a new world order.
For today, take pause and reflect upon how you would best serve humanity in rewriting the herstory of this day.
Grace Be With You,
Candise,
Priestess of Grace
