We're proud to host San Francisco writer & poet SHIZUE SIEGEL this Sunday, June 7th 12PM-3PM for a poetry reading, open mic & writing workshop!

“Breathtakingly fierce and honest poetry that smashes stereotypes and reveals complexities of love across race, class, age and religion. It had me fist-pumping, sighing, cheering, and laughing.”
— Susan Kiyo Ito

We honor and remember Linna Thomas, today on the 1 year anniversary of her passing. In 1973, Linna and her partner,
Janet Brown opened Coalesce in a small house on Harbor Street. Linna & Janet had always wanted the store to be a resource center to the community hence the name COALESCE and the adage,
"A bookstore and more".

In 1982, Coalesce moved up here to Main Street. With the addition of the chapel, out back, Coalesce expanded its offerings to the community Linna so loved. If you knew Linna, I needn't say more about the person she was. If you did not, roam around the store. Go out back and look at the gardens, the pond, the fountain and the Garden Chapel. Many hands have contributed to the creation of this place but from the bookshelf construction and staining to the fountain out back, Linna's hands and imagination were behind those people and what they created to the making of this space.

We, here at COALESCE remember and do our best to honor Linna's memory and energy for the community and the many visitors who've passed through COALESCE. We remember Linna in our welcoming you here, to the place she dreamed of creating more than 50 years ago.

There’s no vocabulary

For love within a family, love that’s lived in

But not looked at, love within the light of which

All else is seen, the love within which

All other love finds speech.

This love is silent. —T.S. Eliot

April 2, If you make yourself a sheep, the wolves will eat you" is a proverb famously quoted by
Benjamin Franklin in 1773. It means that passivity, meekness, or failure to stand up for oneself invites exploitation and harm. The phrase advises against submitting to injustice, suggesting that a little "sturdiness" or resistance is necessary to avoid being taken advantage of.
