For those of you in the bay area. This concert is featuring the Livermore Amador Symphony where our daughter Elise is a cellist. Many of the instruments used in the performance have been recovered after being stolen by the N***s during World War Il. They are now back in the hands of musicians worldwide who are paying tribute to the victims by using their instruments.

It’s a snowy day here and no ones around. I have a weekly ritual of sharpening my chisels. I like to do it when it’s quiet and no one is around. I use an old guitar strap for a strop.
The chisel in my hand is my favorite chisel it belonged to my grandfather. It must be at least 100 years old. Sometimes the greatest treasures are the simplest of things.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but we’ve been so busy here at the shop I really have not had enough time to make any videos lately.
I have decided to post this because it was an interesting issue we had to solve. Also, I talk a little bit about why it’s not always a good idea to attempt certain Lutherie on your own. The good news is that the neck in this video was salvageable .

What the hell? In my nearly three decades as an instrument repair tech and luthier this is a first. While working on a brand new Les Paul that one of my customers recently purchased from a big Internet retailer, I discovered an electrical spade that not only was wedged under the truss rod nut but also was painted over by Gibson in the factory. I guess the 55 point inspection that was supposed to take place before it was shipped to the customer didn’t happen.

Someone had the bright idea to paint the pickups and hardware on this classic 1966 Fender. It will take hours of hand work to remove the paint and reverse the curse.

Sharpening my cabinet scraper to a razor sharp edge to remove a high spot on a guitar bridge before resetting it.

After removing a bridge from a 50 year old Guild guitar I let it soak in 150° water to soften the surface to aid in removal of the old glue.
