Book Nook Monroe

Book Nook Monroe Book Nook has celebrated over 50 years in business in the same location in historic downtown Monroe. The Book Nook currently has no normal business hours.

Permanently closed.

We have transitioned to on-line sales of our books. We do, however, "pop open" for special events downtown with a great selection of local books.

Seems appropriate to post today that Ducky Dash tickets are available for purchase.

I have passed the baton to another DMBN member (Drew Bentley of Michigan Wine & Beer Portal fame) to continue my legacy of duck wrangling in the great expanse of the River Raisin.

I, however, am going to sell tickets even though the storefront is closed, weird, right? Anyway, if you wish to brave the unknown and are in desperate need of your chance to win the Ducky Dash just come to our door on Mondays through Fridays from 10 am to 3 pm and knock three times and quack once and I'll unlock door and sell you a ticket for $5 each or 3 for $10 - CASH ONLY.

If that seems too labor intensive you can also get tickets from Mary Gail at Frenchie's on E. Front St. or Drew at the Michigan Wine & Beer Portal on S. Monroe St. or Chip and Keri at Williams Insurance now on S. Macomb St. (you can run but you can't hide, Chip).

The tickets sold at the Book Nook have finished in the top ten finishers every year, I think, just sayin'....

Garage Sale is done but the cleaning out continues...

I have a vintage (came with the store) heavy-duty file cabinet for FREE! - it is pretty heavy. I had lots and lots of catalogues in it and it could handle the weight - includes the framework for hanging files. If you want it, ya gotta come and get it. Call the store between 10 am and 3 pm, (734) 241-2665 ASAP - first come, first served.

IF no takers by Friday at 3 pm it will get scrapped.

Whew! We made it - it's Saturday, August 26th and our Garage / Book SALE is happening! We survived water in the garage and being without power for around 15 hours.

C'mon over and grab a new/unused cheap book and check out our other "treasures".

Come behind our building, off the alley - we're here until 4 p.m. and then it all goes away.

Whew! Turned out that Mother Nature had a soft spot for our duckie dash. The sun came out around 5:45 pm and rain held off until about 7:55 pm.

Unfortunately, due to the uncertainty of the weather, all of our other participants (food truck, bounce house, other non-profit groups) cancelled. Whatcha gonna do?

We, however, persevered and with the help of a great (but crazy) group of people we completed the race on time.

So, Thank You!, to all the undaunted duck wranglers and ticket sellers and helpers who scoffed at the clouds and refused to be cowed by weather uncertainty and showed up to pull this event off.

Thanks, as always, to my niece Nicole and her husband Chris who deliver, set up and man the finish line chute; my long-suffering husband Ron and my crazy sister Judy who continue to get roped into this stuff - you can run but you cannot hide; my BF Dawn and her two boys (my godsons) Christopher and Nick; the veteran Ducky Dash Gould family (Linda, Olivia, Madeline, and Eli) who have helped since the very beginning; by brother Randy (who dodged it last year but I guilted him for this year); pals Krysta and Brenna; and Wendy, Kayleigh and Madison who helped just because they wanted too (no guilt or arm-twisting). Also, thanks to my compatriots of the DMBN Chip, Mary Gail, Staci, and Paula - there's no "i" in team, right?

A big shout out to DPS and the police department who help with this event every year.

AND Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket or who braved the elements to come out and watch the duckies race for glory.

Check the DMBN page for the list of winners.

Just a reminder, we're looking for someone under the age of 65 with two good knees to chair this event next year - I'm happy to help.

It's Ducky Dash Race Day!

We just need Mother Nature to smile upon our little endeavor between 5:45 pm and 8 pm tonight. (Thursday, Aug 17, 2023)

If you haven't got your ticket yet, don't despair - tickets will be available for purchase in the Riverfront parking lot between 6 p.m. and 6:50 p.m. Ducks drop at 7 p.m. $5 each or 3 for $10 - cash only.

My team of dedicated volunteers care about the river too and will do everything they possibly can to capture all the rubber duckies. We did not lose ANY ducks last year.

You are always welcome to come watch and of course, you are ALWAYS welcome to actually volunteer and get in the water (its about knee high) with us to assist in duckie capture - we are ALWAYS looking for help.

The rubber duckies spend about 20 minutes at most in the water and then are all scooped up and stored for next year.

Hope to see ya down there - weather permitting.

It's no mystery...

The annual Ducky Dash is coming on Thursday (weather permitting).

So to encourage you to buy a ticket (whether you want to or not) I shall regale you (OK, torture you) with some duck jokes:

What's a duck's favorite taco topping?
Quackamole!

What do you call a duck that breaks into people's houses?
A robber ducky!

Why don't ducks like reading directions?
They prefer to wing it.

Why did the duck get a second job?
She had too many bills.

What do you get when you mix ducks with fireworks?
Firequackers.

Had enough? Did ya get a ticket yet? I can keep going...

Ducky Dash, Thursday, August 17th at 6 p.m. - ducks drop at 7 p.m. in the River Raisin - come down a watch along the Riverwalk!
Tickets $5 each or 3 for $10 - Cash Only

The countdown has begun.

A week from today is the World Famous (note the hyperbole) Downtown Monroe Annual Ducky Dash sponsored by the Downtown Monroe Business Network (DMBN).

The DMBN is a membership group of committed business owners who actively work (while running their own businesses) to find programs, events and other ways to improve the downtown experience.

The very large tree that came downriver and hit the Monroe Street bridge has been magically removed (OK, it might have involved a big crane and some people) and now our race track is clear.

This Saturday, August 12, there will be a river clean up as well to ensure the safety of our ducks and well, you know cleaning the river.

So, the point of this ramble is did you get your Ducky Dash Ticket yet? What are you waiting for? The tickets can be purchased $5 each or 3 for $10 - cash please) at Williams Insurance at 28 S. Macomb St.; Frenchie's Fine Jewelry, Coins & Stamps at 15 E. Front St.; and Salon 23 at 23 W. Front St. And yeah, if procrastination is your thing, you can purchase them on Race Day.

Hope to see ya next Thursday!

P.S.
Psst! Totally unrelated to the Ducky Dash, we're going to have a "Make My Really Awesome Junk, Your Treasure" SALE (aka Garage Sale) behind the store on Saturday, August 26th from 9am to 4pm - more details to come.
