Habitat loss and how everyone can help

Here in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, habitat loss due to residential and commercial construction is staggering. From displaced wildlife to the loss of wildflower genetics, its disheartening. Many of the low areas that held water and were marked with lone willow trees have been filled in. These pocket Prairies were full of blooming Natives that provided nectar to pollinators.

Joing the Local Native Rio Grande Valley Plant Society of Texas is a great way to help mitigate the loss of Native Plants. They provide the resources to successfully plant Texas Natives and show the wildlife that benefit from them.

Our Native Plant of the Week is Conoclinium betonicifolium, commonly called Betony Mistflower. Here in South Texas, its known as Padre Island Mistflower, as it grows in the sand dunes.

It blooms the normal shades of blue to purple, most commonly in the Spring and Fall. Ours bloom throughout the year, responding well to rainfall and occasional supplemental watering.

Today's thoughts are from my Better Half on her Peggy Martin Roses. We planted ours around 10 years ago and visitors to the butterfly garden have enjoyed its blooms ever since.

Candi gets calls and messages about the Peggy Martin Roses(and other plants) she produces and wanted to share these points.

We produce the plants from South Texas. The plants are grown completely in the Rio Grande Valley, so they are well acclimated to our soil, water, and relentless Sun. Our nursery plants are always watered only as needed, much like most homeowners do. They do not go into shock when then have been non stop irrigated in most commercial nurseries, but adapt by developing a better root structure.

Candi also pointed out that by producing our own plants, we aren't having to pay higher freight costs bringing in truckload of plants that aren't used to our Valley Summers.

She(and I) wanted to thank everyone for their Support over the last weeks. We are busy re-stocking the front of the nursery, potting up our 5 gallon Turks cap and most importantly getting ready for our Fall Plant Sale.
