Seek the Lord
A close relationship with the Lord is built by dedicating time to spend with Him—day by day, year by year.

Psalm 63:1
John 17-19

A close relationship with the Lord doesn’t happen accidentally. It requires continual, deliberate decisions to pursue Him. Intimacy can’t be achieved in an inspiring weekend conference, nor can it be accomplished by reading a chapter or two of the Bible and praying indifferently. Seeking God is a lifetime commitment—day by day, year by year.

Too many believers are satisfied to have a shallow, superficial relationship with the Lord. They’ll approach God for relief from suffering or fulfillment of other needs but are unwilling to sit quietly for an extended period of time just getting to know Him through prayer and His Word. Yet the most important pursuit in a believer’s life is building a relationship with God. (See Ps. 27:4.) To forfeit this great blessing is a tragedy.

God doesn’t need anything from you, but He desires your loving devotion and intimate fellowship. Ask yourself, Is this what I want, too? If your answer is yes, are you willing to make the necessary commitment? Seeking the Lord cannot be something you hurry through or approach casually (Psalm 63:1). It will cost you time and effort, but the rewards are worth any sacrifice.

Jesus, my prayer is that I (we) may always seek You first, my (our) Lord and my (our) God.

The Key to the Good Things in Life
The Lord delights in helping and providing for those who seek Him.

John 14-16

Perhaps the title of today’s devotion sounds like a self-help book promising comfort and wealth if you follow 10 easy steps. But when you consider how our culture defines the good things in life, you’ll realize that God’s definition isn’t the same—truly good things are achieved only by seeking Him. When we make God our top priority, we can expect His blessings of ...

A deep love relationship. Those who earnestly seek God learn to know Him intimately and experience an amazing sense of oneness with Him (Jeremiah 29:13).

Satisfaction. Only the Lord can fill the empty place in every heart. All earthly pursuits of pleasure or purpose fade in comparison to the satisfaction found in His presence.

Joy. Seeking God results in joy that circumstances can’t steal, since it’s based on a believer’s relationship with Christ.

Help. The Lord’s hand of favor is upon those who seek Him. He delights in coming to their aid and providing for them.

Are you experiencing these good things, or have other pursuits sidetracked you? Your thoughts reveal your priorities. If you habitually go all day without thinking of God, you’re not earnestly seeking Him. But when He’s the delight of your life, you won’t be able to forget Him.

Ezra 8:22
“The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.”

Jesus, empty me of me and fill me with You, help me to live all my days obediently unto You and to always seek You first in everything, my Lord and my God.

Running the Race of Faith
All believers reach a finish line in life—are you running to receive an eternal prize?

Hebrews 12:1-3
1 Corinthians 3:11-15
John 12-13

Imagine you’re running in a marathon, and one of the athletes decides to pick his own path. He keeps to the 26.2-mile race standard and sets his finish line in the same spot as the official one, but he picks routes with fewer hills and competitors. His plan seems excellent to him, but when he crosses the finish line, there will be no medal or ribbon waiting.

That would certainly be a silly thing to do. Yet we can fall into this very trap when we decide the course for our life instead of running the race God sets. (See Heb. 12:1.) By submitting to His will, we remain on the right path. But the moment we revert to old habits or start making decisions based on our own wisdom, we go far afield.

Whether believers run the race God’s way or their own way, they’ll reach a finish line—but that doesn’t mean it’s the same one. No one wants to look back and realize, I didn’t run the course meant for me. I accomplished nothing of value. The only truly lasting and worthwhile deeds are those done for the Lord in the power of His Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:11-15).

And thankfully, no matter how far off course we veer, the Holy Spirit is still present. He reminds us of the right path—and gives us the power to get back on it and persevere.

Jesus, help me (us) to run the race You have set before me (us) with endurance and obedience unto You, my Lord and my God.

The Courage to Obey
Will you courageously trust God when He calls you to a task that feels beyond your abilities?

Joshua 1:1-9
Numbers 14:10
John 10-11

Most people would be honored to lead a nation. Perhaps Joshua felt that way, too. But there’s no doubt that he knew it would be a daunting task and responsibility. Yet he was determined to obey God no matter what.

The Hebrew people could be difficult. Not only did they grumble about food, water, safety, and rules; they also questioned Moses’ leadership and rebelled against God. Now Joshua—a man they once threatened to stone (Numbers 14:10)—was poised to lead them to their new home. It was a God-sized task indeed.

Ultimately, however, Joshua took up the mantle of leadership with courage, boldness, and resolve. He placed his faith in the Lord, who had never let the people down. Joshua fully expected God to be true to His word again and deliver them to the Promised Land.

No matter what challenge you are facing, God will enable you to tackle it bravely, calmly, and victoriously. Joshua’s courage was based upon years of seeing God’s faithfulness. Whether you’ve been a Christian for five minutes or 50 years, you can have the same confidence. The Bible promises that the Lord is sufficient to meet your needs and to keep your spirit secure all the way to heaven.

Steps of Obedience
The Holy Spirit uses the Bible to guide us—sometimes into the unknown.

Reading Related Scripture
Psalm 119:147-148
Psalm 119:27
John 14:26
John 8-9

Yesterday we studied the importance of trusting and waiting on God. Today, let’s look at three additional requirements:

Meditating. If we want to know the mind of God, we must meditate upon His Word (Psalm 119:27). We do not need to pick the “right” verses in order to know His will. He has the power to direct us from any portion of the Bible. Our part is to pursue wisdom through Scripture over a sustained period of time.

Listening. We must make an effort to learn how to recognize the prompting of the Holy Spirit. If we are studying a passage of Scripture, He will shed light on its meaning so we can understand how God is directing us. Or He will bring to remembrance a passage we have learned and reveal how it applies to our situation (John 14:26).

Walking. One final lesson regarding obedience is that sometimes we must walk even when the way is unclear. Abraham is a good example. The Lord told Him to move out of his homeland but did not specify the destination.

As the week begins, consider the importance of obedience in the life of faith. Then ask God what He wants you to work on first—trusting, waiting, meditating, listening, or walking with Him.

Psalm 139:23-24
23 "Search me, O God, and know my heart; Test me, and know my anxieties;
24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting."

The School of Obedience
We can fully trust and obey God because He will never fail us.

Read Related Scripture
Proverbs 3:5-6
John 14:15
John 6-7

Obedience is a funny thing. We expect it from our children, and it’s essential to success in organizations like the military. However, if we’re being honest, none of us truly enjoys surrendering our will to another person. They can fail us, after all. Thankfully, God never does, and obeying Him is always the wisest course of action.

Learning to obey involves ...

Trusting. Obedience comes from a foundation of faith, while most rebellion stems from a lack of it. That means we will believe God is who He says He is—and accept His plans, methods, and timing. We show our love for the Father by living this way (John 14:15). And remember, God delights in blessing those who follow His will.

Waiting. When we don’t know what to do, we often try to rely on our own understanding, make a move, and then hope God will bless it. That’s not scriptural. God’s given us His Spirit as our teacher because He wants us to know His mind and intentions for our life. We must wait in an attitude of trust until we are certain.

God assumes full responsibility for giving us direction in our life. He desires to reveal each step along the way. But we must come to Him with a trusting heart and a willingness to wait before He reveals the next step.

Responding to God’s Love
Have you accepted God's free gift of salvation?

1 John 4:10
John 4-5

God is love. Most likely, we’ve heard these words, but do we really understand what they mean? John 3:16 tells us: Because the Father deeply loves us, He sent His Son in human flesh to live on earth and to save us by dying. This is no shallow love.

Some people question Jesus’ sacrifice, though. They think, Certainly the Lord could have come up with a different way to offer salvation. He is God, so shouldn’t He be able to do all things? They fail to consider two of His unchangeable attributes.

First, God is holy by nature. This means He cannot look upon sin with approval. Second, He is just. As a result, all wrongdoing—without exception—must be dealt with (Romans 6:23).

We all fall short of God’s perfect holiness (Romans 3:23). But our heavenly Father desires an everlasting relationship with us, so He provided the solution by sending His Son Jesus here to live as a man and then die on the cross. This is the ultimate expression of love. As 1 John 4:10 states, “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

Have you accepted God’s free gift of salvation? How do you choose to respond to His amazing love?

Free From Guilt

Since Jesus died on the cross for our sins, we can pursue God's will without the weight of guilt or shame.

Related Scripture
1 Peter 2:22-25
Genesis 3:10
Romans 3:23
Ephesians 1:7
Luke 20-22

Guilt can be defined as anxiety in one’s spirit over a deliberate, willful sin. We can trace this emotion all the way back to the garden of Eden. After Adam and Eve tasted the forbidden fruit, they felt ashamed of their nakedness and hid themselves (Genesis 3:10).

In ancient Israel, people would “pay” for their wrong by sacrificing an animal’s life. Today we no longer need such a brutal way to release our guilt; God has provided a better solution. He sent His Son Jesus to make a way for us to be redeemed and brought into a right relationship with Him. Our Savior made atonement for us with His precious blood. And—praise God!—Jesus rose to life again, conquering death and sin.

The truth is, every one of us has sinned and was separated from God (Romans 3:23). However, we can be liberated from death and guilt by accepting Jesus’ free gift and committing our life to Him. Of course, in our imperfect human state, we won’t be perfectly sinless. But our loving heavenly Father will continue to forgive His children (Ephesians 1:7).

Jesus’ sacrifice gives us freedom from shame and death—plus the promise of eternity with God. Though we are promised forgiveness, our gratitude and love for our Savior should spur us on to repentance, obedience, and service to the Lord.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amén.
