Well here is a tough one to write… but we’re wrapping up the Northern Lights Festival early.
We set out with big big dreams: Build a magical indoor light park for the holidays, and use it to build a scholarship for refugees to go to college.
The thing about swinging the bat at big big dreams, is sometimes you miss. But better to swing and miss than to never step up to the plate.
No need for sympathy. The real reason I’m sharing is because I think the internet has warped entrepreneurship to a bunch of privileged folks celebrating their successes and pretending like there aren’t failures. It’s okay to fail. It’s painful, but it’s important.
The short version of why we’re closing is because we can’t deliver the quality of experience that we set out to build.
While it’s tough to publicly fail… I can honestly say I’d do it all over again.
Through 18 months of trying to get this going, I got a first hand glimpse of some of the best in people.
I got to see corporations that I have all of the respect in the world for embody character up close: Schuler Shoes and Merrell. They carry themselves with grace, intention, and generosity in ways that I’m better for having witnessed and hope to emulate at .
While the event itself didn’t take off like we hoped, I learned more than I could write. I’m learning that it’s possible to be immensely proud of having taken a shot at something of this size (I believe the word for it is cajones). And at the same time be able to be honest about failure. And to hold those at the same time.
IG’s caption limit will keep me from naming everyone I want to thank. Mostly my wife Steph, who always stands in the unknown of these big dreams with me.
This one may not have been the home run I hoped, but I promise to keep swinging. For now, I’m going to focus on building the best screen printing, coffee roasting, and holiday pop up markets that I can. And more importantly, focus on getting in some family & friend time that was given up while building this. Who knows… I might even 😴?
PS - North America’s largest inflatable igloo is for sale. 🏃♂️, don’t walk.
