at 11, I fell from the jutting deck slab of the bridge that led to my island home. The island was surrounded by a slough, a very stagnant and frozen one. I fell roughly 15 ft, broke thru the ice and came up under it. I remember thinking if I didn't do it, I was dead, so pulling my knees under my chest, I exhaled hard, sank to the bottom and with legs like coil springs bouced off the deck, shot up

wards from about 5 ft depth, fist in front ala Mighty Mouse. My arm, and then head and chest passed thru an imaginary barrier. At least I never saw or felt it but I took a breath of pure burning ice as I hauled myself up and off the sheet to the bank. My next breath was easier but now, now I remember the pain. a couple failed attempts to keep moving and I was passed out and hypothermic on the bank of that muddy slough, sprained hand, concussion, so tired, where is everyone, was it storming?
