ā€œTV Indiansā€ by Cara Romero

This one is for the puzzler who likes variation and quick rewards.

If you aren’t a big puzzler, this is the most approachable of the debut collection. The texture of the ground as well as the sky both vary enough to provide some challenge but don’t feel impossible. Each figure’s distinct clothing is fun to identify and see them come together. In order to assemble the TVs, you need to note their differences and also look closely at the scene on each screen. As the puzzle nears completion, take a step back to take in the photograph and the story Romero tells through her careful composition.

How does the color of the sky change? What do you think the ground feels like under your feet? Which TV scenes do you recognize? What materials do you think the clothing is made from?

As with all three puzzles, you can learn more about Cara Romero and the photograph on the back of the puzzle box.

ā€œMonarch Buffalo Horn Cupā€ (detail) by Kevin Pourier

This one is for the puzzler who likes gradients, nuance, and texture.

This puzzle is technically composed of three colors— black, white, and orange. However, these are not solid fields of color— the black of the buffalo horn has several different hues, even streaks, and as a 3D object plays against the light. The orange of the inlaid sandstone varies quite a bit across the cup, and once those gradients are noted, after a quick look at an orange piece and quick color comparisons you’ll know which part of the puzzle it belongs to. The texturing dots, all hand carved, help guide the puzzler in assembling the sections of the wings— especially when referencing the photograph on the puzzle box.

What do you think this piece would feel like on your fingers? How does the network of black outlines form the shapes of the monarch wings? How do the lines of texturing dots differ between different sections of the design?

The back of the puzzle box has more information about the artist Kevin Pourier, the piece, and also includes a full image of the object itself.

ā€œInterruptedā€ (detail) by Dyani White Hawk

This one is for the methodical and detail-oriented puzzler.

While the beadwork may be intimidating, after a closer look you notice no two lines of beads are the same— it is all done by hand in the ā€œlane stitchā€ style. Start by sorting the pieces by color, and after completing the border, address each field of color as its own mini-puzzle. Which ways are the beads oriented? Where are the shadows? How does it look different up close versus from afar?

Save the oil painted segment for last as a treat for a quicker wrap up, or start out with it to get you in the puzzle mood. You choose!

What do you think this piece is about? Each Wahani puzzle has more information about the full piece and artist on the back of the box, where you can learn more about the meaning behind White Hawk’s beautiful work.
