Lots of great new books out this week, led by one of Victoria's favorites of the year: Cat Love by Tomás Q. Morín. Also a new delicious summer read from Andrew Sean Greer, a gorgeous new Book of Birds from Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris, a novel from Dave Eggers, and much more.

This is something a little different than what we usually share.

Meet Gurty. He's one of the canine heroes of J.R. Dawson's beautiful book The Lighthouse at the Edge of the World. He's also her real-life dog, and he's sick.

Gurty is important to me personally, too. As my mother was dying last fall, I told her about how, in The Lighthouse at the Edge of the World, dogs accompany people as they cross from the world of the living to what lies beyond. It was one of our last conversations, and the idea that she would have dogs like Gurty by her side as she crossed over was a great comfort to us both.
