💡 Baja Tech Tip: Not All Shock Fluids Are the Same

Did you know the factory-filled shocks in the HPI Baja are designed around a petroleum-based fork oil, not a 100% silicone RC shock oil?

While the stock fork oil gets the job done, many RC enthusiasts choose to switch to a 100% silicone shock oil because of its consistent viscosity, excellent temperature stability, and predictable damping characteristics. That means your suspension tuning stays more consistent from one run to the next and from one rebuild to the next.

For my Baja SBK build, I’m starting with JT’s 350 cSt using the stock pistons.

Why 350 cSt?

* ✅ The stock piston holes are very small.
* ✅ A lighter silicone oil allows the suspension to cycle more freely.
* ✅ It provides a great baseline before making spring or piston changes.
* ✅ It keeps the suspension from feeling unnecessarily stiff.

Remember, petroleum fork oil and silicone shock oil don’t use the same viscosity scale, so trying to compare them by “weight” can be misleading. It’s always better to start with a proven setup and tune from there.

For a stock-piston Baja SBK, 350 cSt has been an excellent starting point in my testing.

Suspension tuning isn’t about using the thickest oil—it’s about using the right oil for your setup.

What are you running in your Baja shocks? Let me know in the comments! 👇

Well… that tuning session escalated quickly! 😂🏁

Sometimes you’re chasing the perfect suspension setup… and sometimes your RC decides it’s got championship aspirations. 🤣

Thankfully this is all just for laughs! I’ll stick to testing shock oil, dialing in suspensions, and letting the RC do the talking. 😎

🏁 CONSISTENCY IS EVERYTHING. 🏁

Today’s testing wasn’t about chasing one lucky speed run—it was about building a setup that delivers repeatable performance.

🏁 85 MPH
🏁 83 MPH
🏁 91 MPH
🏁 91 MPH

Four passes. Minutes apart. Same setup. Same conditions.

That’s what proper tuning and quality components can do.

Current Setup:

🔹 Stock ARRMA Talion Motor
🔹 Spektrum 8S ESC
🔹 Dual 4S Packs (8S Total)
🔹 Hoons Tires for Drag, Grip & Speed
🔹 EXB Aluminum Upgrades
🔹 EXB Shocks with JT’s Shock Oil dialed in for high-speed stability and control

Take a look at the chassis photos. Everything is laid out with purpose—a clean wiring layout, dual cooling fans, low battery placement for a balanced center of gravity, and a setup built for one thing…

Consistent high-speed performance.

And we’re not finished yet…

⚙️ A spool is on the way. That should put even more power to the pavement, improve consistency even further, and hopefully push this Talion into the 100 MPH club.

🎥 Full speed run video is coming next!

🇺🇸 Happy July 4th Weekend! 🇺🇸

Testing and tuning is all part of the hobby… and let’s face it, not every landing is picture-perfect! 😅

This X-Maxx came up a little short, took a tumble, rolled over… and lived to bash another day. 💪 Sometimes you stick the landing, sometimes gravity has other plans.

The important part is getting out there, having fun, learning what works, making adjustments, and doing it all over again.

We’ve been putting in a lot of time dialing this truck in, and JT’s Shock Oil has been a big part of that process. The goal isn’t just the perfect jump—it’s building a setup that can handle the imperfect ones too.

Have a safe and happy Independence Day weekend! Keep the rubber side down… or at least try to! 🇺🇸🤘
