Today is , and now more than ever it is important that our voices be heard. Quill and Queery is trans-owned, and both co-owners identify as q***r. Trans rights are an integral part of our everyday lives, as one of us lives an identity that ignorance is trying to police and legislate. We are not silent, and will not be silenced. Today, we highlight books by trans and non-binary authors that tell trans and non-binary stories. These are fiction and non-fiction, for adults, children, and all ages in between. It is important that our voices are lifted, our presence is acknowledged, and transphobia eradicated. We are still a small business, but we will be as loud as we can to make sure our community is heard.

Happy ! Today we celebrate the literary women we love, fictional and real, old and young, rebel and rule follower, and all those in between. We celebrate our sisters, and yes, that ABSOLUTELY includes trans women. Travel through their lives with these books, and drop your favorite books by women or featuring your favorite women below ✨✨

Day Three: And Tango Makes Three, by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell, illustrated by Henry Cole. Based on the true story of two male penguins who paired up during mating season year after year, And Tango Makes Three is a heartwarming story about adoption, love, and family that has been challenged almost every year since it’s release for same-sex relationships and what some groups say is “homosexual indoctrination”. The authors of the book, couple Peter and Justin, just wanted to teach kids about all the different kinds of families there are, and thought doing so with animals would be more fun. Sadly, many parents didn’t agree, and the book is still challenged today.

Day Three: SPEAK by , named the fourth most challenged and banned book in 2020. Most recently, it’s been challenged "because it was thought to contain a political viewpoint and it was claimed to be biased against male students, and for the novel's inclusion of r**e and profanity." (Taken from the Wikipedia page on the novel.) Interesting that the story of a girl talking about recovering from her r**e and assault is considered biased against the ra**st. Hm, where have we seen that play out before? Something something art imitating life…..

Day two: All Boys Aren’t Blue: A Memoir Manifesto, by . Most “typical” banned books lists (the type that are reprinted and go around every year) have titles like To Kill a Mockingbird, Huckleberry Finn, and other, older titles. What isn’t being widely published, unless you know where to look or keep up with the titles, is that a majority of the titles challenged in the last five years have had similar themes: LGBT+ authors or characters, anti racism education, social justice, or they’re simply by Black, Indigenous, or other people of color telling their stories. It’s Banned Books Week, and as censorship becomes more rampant every day (Texas has banned the most books of any state this year) and more and more people want to suppress the voices of marginalized communities, reading banned books is more important than ever.
