Meet the Sowers family!

Hello, our names are Nathan and Leah. Nathan is a grandson of Jeff and Marlys Sowers and grew up learning the art of basket weaving from Marlys at a young age. As he got older, he developed a passion for woodworking under Jeff’s guidance and now completes all of the Shaker box work for the family. Over the years, Nathan has expanded his craft into furniture making and produces Shaker box bands for customers across the country.

Nathan and Leah began dating in 2020, and it wasn’t long before Leah joined him for Sundays at Jeff and Marlys’ shop. While Nathan worked alongside Jeff, Leah learned to weave with Marlys, who patiently taught her the entire Nantucket basket-making process from beginning to end. Those years spent learning side by side are deeply cherished, and Leah considers Marlys the very best teacher.

Together, Nathan and Leah helped with many shows during the final years of Jeff and Marlys’ lives, including the Iowa State Fair and the Christkindlmarket. This past December, they returned to Christkindlmarket for the first time without Marlys, continuing the traditions she held so close. Nathan and Leah have been happily married for two years and are expecting their first child in June. Leah continues to weave when she has time away from her other business, Sowers Gymnastics, and remains the one who finishes all of the family’s Nantucket baskets using the skills Marlys so lovingly passed down.

Happy last weekend of the Iowa State Fair!

Pioneer Hall doesn't quite feel the same without Pa and Grandma in their booth. We miss them dearly, as well as all of you who would stop by to visit and say hello! In honor of their favorite week, feel free to share a special memory you have of them with us. We cherish memories and moments that keep their spirit alive.❤️

Although we no longer have a booth at the ISF, we have still been working hard to create an inventory. Below are a few options that are available on our website. We will have more added soon!

Thank you for your support! We love you all!

Meet the Sowers family! Next up is Natalie Geisler.

Hello, my name is Natalie. I am another granddaughter of Jeff and Marlys Sowers. I graduated from Southeast Warren High School in 2024. I don’t have one specific job title, but I stay busy doing a variety of odd jobs. I recently purchased a rental property as I am trying to grow my real estate business, NG Properties LLC. In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors, spending time with family, and tending to my cattle herd.

Growing up living so close to my grandparents, I spent many days and nights at their house whether it was early mornings waiting for the bus or sleepovers with my cousins. Around the age of 4, Grandma taught me how to weave Nantucket-style baskets. Some of my favorite memories are working in the shop with my grandparents and cousins. My family and I still dearly love the trade of basketry and woodworking. We love the community and connections that this business has brought to all of our lives!

Meet the Sowers family!

Hello, my name is Josie Sowers. I am the granddaughter of Jeff and Marlys Sowers. I recently graduated from Grand View University with my BSN and plan to work on a Neuro/Trauma unit at UnityPoint - Iowa Methodist. In my free time, I enjoy staying busy. You can either find me working on a new sewing project, continuing the basket tradition, or spending time with my family.

From a young age, my grandma taught me how to weave Nantucket-style baskets, and it’s been a meaningful part of my life ever since. She taught me the value of patience, tradition, and hard work. Each piece created is handmade with care and attention to detail.

Although we no longer have a booth at the Iowa State Fair, we are proud to continue this small business to keep our grandparents’ legacy alive. Our website is listed in the bio, and we welcome you to check out our inventory. We enjoy sharing this craft that we love so dearly with all of you!
