Mermaid Books A community bookstore for fishies of all ages in Milford, CT No one’s ever found it, but folks here love to tell the story.

Legend has it that real-life buccaneer Captain William Kidd buried treasure on Charles Island, off the Milford shoreline. Like peanut butter and jelly and Jay and Beyoncé, scallywag pirates and magical mermaids go together. So, we named our little bookstore Mermaid Books, in a nod to Milford’s history and all the fun we have celebrating it. Located in downtown Milford, right off the green, Mermaid

Books is women-owned and family-friendly. When we open we’ll offer story times, author events, and workshops and classes for fishies of all ages, big and small. We’ll also collaborate with schools and nonprofit groups focused on literacy and learning. We’re looking forward to becoming your neighborhood spot for new books and bookish gifts, toys, bits and bobs. Well, we had so much fun during Indie Bookstore Weekend and our first print swap we needed a month (and change) to recover. But now we’re back! With our FIRST custom print! Can’t wait to do it all again — but first, a little recap of our first Inciardi Party.

We’ll be serving up our pink prints set through Friday. Grab your pop tarts and your wedding cakes while you can!

FRIENDS!! Our little baby bookstore is ONE! How?! Where does the time go???

Swing on down on June 12, 13, and 14, for new Inciardi prints and bagels and cold brew and cake and ice cream and storytime and a whole lot more. We’re looking at a weekend-long hug-a-thon, folks. It was a total pleasure to welcome to the shop last week to celebrate the release of her new book A Novel Crime, a darkly comic thriller about a desperate, struggling novelist who’ll do anything — anything! — to succeed. We’re grateful to Lynne Constantine () for leading a wonderful conversation and audience Q&A, and — a special treat — very generously donating for raffle advanced reader copies of her latest novels: Don’t Open Your Eyes, out in paperback next month, and Promise Me Never, due in August. Our winners have been selected and notified. Hooray! Thanks, Lynne!

We had the very best time with the one and only last weekend at our first drag storytime with the fabulous and amazing . There were mermaids! And sparkles! And stories about belonging, and being proud of ourselves, and being family, and being proud of our families, all of which are unique and beautiful and special in their own way.

Hark! On the horizon, there, it’s, it’s…it’s June!

Wasn’t sure we’d make it, as not very long ago, summer seemed very far away. Possibly canceled.

But we got a taste of it this week, and indeed, it looks like summer is still on and coming in hot — and YAY for that, and for all of the fun we’re going to have! June at Mermaid Books brings our first mahjong class! Birthday festivities! Story hours, with special guests! Buckle up, bookish friends, for there is much to look forward to. ❤️🌈❤️🌈

We were instantly smitten with Wake Up, Grouchy Bear!, one of our favorite new kids’ books of 2026, and the latest picture book from author and illustrator David Ezra Stein. The vibrant colors! The cutie pie creatures! We want to live inside this silly, beautiful technicolor story!

How lucky we were, then, to welcome and his family last weekend for a special storytime and puppet show featuring one of his other indelible characters: the Interrupting Chicken!

We want to thank David for joining us — and for illustrating an original story crafted on the fly by our young attendees, Little Red Riding Cow, pictured in this slideshow, which we can’t wait to post in the store. Thank you, David!

We’re also indebted to our partner at the .ps, Dr. Amy Perras, for helping us host this special visit, and of course, thankful as well to all the moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas and littles who came out to meet David and give him a warm Milford welcome. There were so many great listeners in the crowd! We loved being with you.

Today is May Day, International Workers Day. Across the globe and right here in the United States, activists will gather for rallies and street protests to demand that nations and their leaders elevate the rights of working people. Here in America — home to more than 900 billionaires, whose wealth swelled, by the way, to $6.9 TRILLION in 2025 — activists will be calling for policies that tax those billionaires so that one day soon they finally pay their fair share.

We wholeheartedly support this message. One billionaire in particular (and you all know his name) has taken a special interest in gutting independent bookstores. Readers have demonstrated they won’t let this clown destroy indies, which give back to their communities in all sorts of important and meaningful ways. Last weekend you came out in NUMBERS to declare your indie love, and all of us who run these places felt it.

We stand in solidarity with businesses closing today, and people striking and protesting. Enough is enough. We can’t close, but we understand if you aren’t shopping today. If you are, if possible, we encourage you to pay with cash.

We save us. Thanks for being here, as always.
