I'm not sure how to start this post, but it's time to say goodbye (as Sent-Well). I started Sent-Well in 2011, because it was a friend's birthday and at the time, my phone only gave me a 3 day notification of the upcoming event. That was not enough time to get a card, stamps, and mail it out. Thus Sent-Well was born.

I have learned SO much about starting a small business, and especially about the US Postal Service ! They may just want to hire me as a consultant lol! I have been to so many post offices, and met so many nice people there. You can ask me just about any question related to the mail, and I bet I can answer it! I even have thoughts on better post office interior design 🙂 Well, all that aside... no matter how hard I try, without changing the human powered, handwritten personalized nature of what Sent-Well truly is, I just cannot compete with AI. That, and the economy has hit some of our biggest corporate clients hardest, and they too had to make hard changes to turn the ship at their end to stay afloat. I am so proud to say we made it thru covid, without any loans etc. I was able to keep the team going and we mailed thousands of cards to veterans, nursing homes, hospitals and police departments. We made it thru when so many small businesses fell. I am so proud of that and the amazing team I had with me! We've had some major wins along the way - anytime I hit a hurdle, I just level set expectations and set out to make it happen. And, we did! We never said no, we just figured out how to get it done.

I've also met so many wonderful people, and helped folks stay personally connected to those that matter most to them. I've heard incredible stories of friendship and love. Sent-well truly was such a dream come true for me, it is so hard to say goodbye, however I know I have many thoughts and ideas swirling around in my brain and hope to combine my love of pets and art & fashion to create something new. I've started working on something called FleaMarket Pets and hope to launch it in 2025. So if you want to stay in touch, I will keep my email open for a bit longer - sentwellatgmaildotcom. Please feel free to reach out at any time! I wish all of you the very best and thank you for being a lover of handwritten cards like I am.

The tradition of exchanging Valentine's cards can be traced again back to ancient Rome and the Lupercalia festival which was celebrated mid February and was the festival celebrating fertility.

As Valentine's cards progressed through the years, Victorian Era cards were showstoppers. Often elaborate in design, embellished with lace, ribbons, colorful illustrations, poetry and romantic verses. They were originals often handcrafted from materials bought at a stationer's shop. They were flat sheets of paper and would be folded and sealed with wax so they could be mailed. These cards were handmade, and slipped under the door of t love interest.

The tradition as we know it in the US became popular in the 19th century with Esther Howland. She is known as the mother of the American Valentine. She was inspired after receiving an English Victorian Valentine and is responsible for the mass market appeal of Valentine's cards. Her fancily designed cards were embellished much like her inspiration and they became highly desired. Her cards were so popular, it is reported that in the mid 1870's she sold $100,000 in cards. Her company eventually became New England Valentine Company. Pretty exciting as a woman-owned business back in the 1800's!

Cheers to new beginnings, if you missed the Christmas card window you’re in luck, New Year’s cards have been gaining popularity and have several benefits. The holiday season is so busy with activities, shopping cooking, entertaining, decorating it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Cards are opened and put to the side with all of the other incoming mail and advertisements.

Sending New Year’s cards allows for a more relaxed and sincere message. Making more of an impact when it can be appreciated and stand out. You will be maintaining personal connections, reminding your client why they chose you because you go above and beyond and value your clients. They will be touched by the thought and the sentiment behind your gesture.

New Year cards are also more inclusive and reach a broader audience respecting different, cultural and religious backgrounds. New Year’s is also celebrated worldwide, making it a universally recognized occasion.

By kicking off the New Year in the right way, you’re extending the celebration and allowing your wishes to be timely even for those that may celebrate different holidays. You have the first few weeks of January to send them escaping that mad, holiday rush. So don’t delay, embrace the new start and connect with your people and strengthen your relationships at the same time.

I had a really weird dream.
I was at as an antiques market with Randy. I saw this red shepherd dog. He looked leathery and furry at the same time. Ironically like this AI image I just found. He looked like this in my dream without the flower on his forehead. I went over to him, thinking how realistic he looked. A woman said, I walked him yesterday and he was good with my little dog. I became worried that no one was showing interest in him and he seemed sad. Then I realized he was AI. Not real. But he seemed to have feelings. He was animated - he moved like a real dog. There was a card in front of him that read, “like a real dog, but better. He will never die- he won’t get old, he won’t get sick, he will be your best friend to the end.”
I was so conflicted in the dream. I wanted to give him a home- he seemed like he had feelings and was so sad.
I awoke so freaked out, I thought about it all day. AI could replace real pets. Someone might choose an AI version over a real dog just because it won’t die and they won’t have to go thru what a real animal (or human) goes thru- getting sick, vet bills, sadness when they pass. This would in effect cause real animals to languish even more in shelters than they already do, simply because they are real, and will one day die. I caution everyone to think thru the real effects of AI and what it could do to our world. It’s a fun tool right now, but what happens when it becomes “real”?
