We’ve built entire regions around one core assumption:
that water will behave the way it always has.
That assumption is starting to shift.
And when it does, it doesn’t just affect water--
it affects everything built on top of it.

The Water Line — a briefing series on land, water, and the future of West Texas. Episode 1 is now live: “Where the Line Is Moving”

In this episode, we introduce:
• how this region was built on water
• why that system is now under pressure
• and what that means for landowners, developers, and communities moving forward.

If you own land, build on it, or depend on it…
this conversation is already affecting you. You just may not hear it yet.

32 years of intention in every line.

For more than three decades, KDC Associates has focused on designing systems, shaping landscapes, and building what lasts. What began as a commitment to thoughtful, purposeful design has grown into work that impacts communities across Texas.

In 2025, we expanded our presence into Lubbock and the Dallas–Fort Worth area—continuing our mission of changing the landscape (literally) through strategic, forward-thinking design.

We’re grateful for the clients, partners, and communities who have trusted us along the way.

And we’re just getting started.

Hello friends…. Not everything worth noticing is meant to be seen. Some things are meant to be experienced.
The slope of the land. The way water moves. The silence between the swings.

That’s landscape architecture.

What does a landscape architecture firm actually do?
Most people think it’s about how a space looks. It’s not.

At KDC Associates, we design how land works, before it’s ever built. From water movement and grading to infrastructure coordination and long-term performance, our work determines whether a project succeeds… or slowly fails over time.

Because when land isn’t planned correctly:
• Water doesn’t move
• Infrastructure breaks down
• Maintenance costs rise
• And the user experience suffers

These aren’t design issues. They’re system failures. That’s where we come in.

KDC Associates
Designing systems. Not just spaces.

This week, Eric Bernard, Director of Planning with KDC Associates spoke at the Texas ASLA Conference on something that’s becoming impossible to ignore:
Water is changing the way we design, build, and live in Texas.

After the devastating floods in Central Texas last summer, the question isn’t if these events will happen again…

It’s whether we’re designing for them.

Green infrastructure gives us the opportunity to stop reacting and start working with the land, the water, and the realities in front of us.

Proud to be part of the conversations that matter.

Was recently asked if what we have been up to…..

30 years ago today I walked into an accountant’s office and told them I was starting a company. (Who walks into an accountant’s office on April 15th!?) I had earlier come home after leaving a perfectly good job and told Carol that I had quit my job and was starting my own planning and design firm. Her reaction “I only told you to quit. I didn’t think you really would!”. (She then quickly became my greatest asset and supporter, and later the boss of the company!). My reasoning…I didn’t want to be a 60 year old wondering what could have been. I’ll be 60 in two weeks. Today marks our 30th anniversary and I can briefly brag that our little company now has projects in 156 counties in Texas, as well as New Mexico, Iowa, Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma, California, Louisiana, and across Mexico, the Caribbean, and the international market. We have done design work on over 75 university projects. We have designed over 100 public park projects, covering over 56,000 acres of public space. Our client list somehow includes some of the most powerful people in the world. I want to thank Carol Langford Cook for years of encouragement, and my kids David Cook and Elizabeth Resch for putting up with a dad when I answered the phone on beaches and mountain streams, telling them that “this phone call may be paying for this trip!” Thank you, family. It’s been quite the journey.
