•2001 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia Home Opener Souvenirs Home Run Barry Bonds /25
Before Panini purchased the Playoff brand, Playoff existed as its own independent card company. Beginning in 1992, Playoff broke into the card market with their, at the time, high end flagship product. Unlike virtually all cards at the time, Playoff differentiated itself with their thick stock cards and silver matte finish to their products.
It wasn't until 2001 when Playoff broke onto the baseball card market with their 2001 Playoff Absolute release, a staple within the Playoff brand. This much anticipated release did not disappoint, as they included a multitude of unique memorabilia cards with not just jersey patches and game used bat pieces, but they also used bases, baseballs, and other unique items at the time. Additionally, each box of this release came with a signed baseball as well! See the comments section for some pictures of this.
This Bonds card came in four variations, with the more common one only having one relic window and serial numbered to 400. The two relic window cards were numbered to 200, and three relic window cards were numbered to 75. But these quad relics were only numbered to 25, which was ridiculously low for 2001. These came in around only 3.5% of boxes!
A collector and friend of the shop brought this Bonds in last fall after he was gifted the card from a fellow collector. As a knowledgeable '90s card guy, my mouth hit the floor when I saw this. While it had some obvious condition issues once it was taken out of its 25 year old case, it was still an easy decision to send this to PSA for preservation purposes.
These are the things we love at the shop - people bringing in cool cards just to show us and talk about the story behind them (and occasionally to send to PSA as well).
