Happy birthday to Aloysius Snuffleupagus, better known as Snuffy, Sesame Street's lovable woolly mammoth-like creature, whose in-show birthday is August 19, though he remains eternally four and a half years old.

Snuffy first appeared on Sesame Street on November 15, 1971, originally performed by Jerry Nelson, who also voiced the character. For nearly 14 years, the show's central joke was that Big Bird's adult neighbors assumed Snuffy was an imaginary friend, since a running series of near misses kept the two Snuffleupaguses and the grown-ups from ever crossing paths. Producers finally revealed Snuffy to the full cast in a 1985 episode, largely out of concern that the storyline might discourage real children from telling trusted adults about their own experiences, fearing they wouldn't be believed.

Martin P. Robinson has performed Snuffy's front half and voice since 1981, continuing a role originated by Nelson and briefly held by Michael Earl Davis. Snuffy lives in a cave at 456 Snuffle Circle with his parents and younger sister Alice, and remains Big Bird's closest friend on the show to this day.
