Still using the placeholder pommel, trying to get a sense of how this thing will work as a finished sword. The final pommel will be a type h wheel pommel, with a red gem set in the recess.

Just quenched the war sword! Please, God, don't let me have messed this up!

Been quiet for awhile now. I haven't finished my commissions yet, for a number of reasons. One of those reasons was a lack of a suitably versatile belt sander. Finding myself with the necessary funds from my day job, I splurged on this thing, a 2hp 2x72 belt sander. Which overloaded my circuit breaker as soon as I turned it on. So I bought a rheostat and wired it in. It burned out immediately. So I bought another one, and it worked. Finally, I could turn it on. And the small contact wheel promptly caused the belt to come off and fling itself across the shop. Turns out the wheel was concave, and prevented the belt from tracking properly. So I sanded it convex, and now I'm waiting on new sanding belts. 1200 bucks well spent.

Take 2 on the great sword of war, and a rough forged shortsword. I botched the grind on the first war sword, and it warped in the quench. I'm going to cut it down into an arming sword. In the meantime I have decided to up my game on how close to finished I can forge, inspired by men like Gael Fabre and Fabrice Cognot. Therefore I have made a great effort on these two blades to get them as close as possible to finished without going too thin to reasonably grind and polish.

Work continues on this late thirteenth century great sword of war. The pommel is one I had lying around, and the guard has yet to be drifted for the tang, but it's always nice to get that first mock up of what the final product will look like.

A walking stick I hand carved for myself from the branch of an apple tree planted by my father. I had to prune this branch, but didn't want to chip or burn it. It was too thick to work as a walking stick without modification, so I carved it down to make it more wieldy. When it dries I'll wipe it down with linseed oil and add a lanyard.

Finished customizing a Cold Steel viking sword. The hilt components are hand forged and carved. It now resembles a 13th century arming sword of Oakeshott's Type X, with a type H pommel and type 6 guard. The base blade has no distal taper, which I can do nothing about. The fittings are not mechanically precise, and I didn't try to make them precise. Original swords from the period show a lot of "imperfections" that arise from handwork, and I have deliberately emulated that.

This sword is nearing completion. I've lost track of how many pommels I've made. Who'd a thunk a simple disk would be so hard to make? I certainly didn't when I started this project. Through several delays it has crept closer to completion. Now the end is in sight. Leather on the grip and a peen block, and it'll be done. Thank God I'll be done with wheel pommels for a while.
