The manzanitas, wildflowers, and shrubs that actually belong in California's dry, fire-prone soil almost never reach a big-box shelf. A handful of specialty nurseries grow them anyway, and serious gardeners drive two or three hours to reach the ones that feed local bees, birds, and butterflies.
