On occasion I have to put catalogs and spreadsheets aside and just READ. It’s part of my job, after all.

This week’s pile consists of the books of three authors doing events with us in May: Andrew Hudson, Julia Alvarez, and Stephen Kiernan; a book group title (Billie Holiday); an ARC (Ayad Akhtar); and a friend’s manuscript. To say I’m torn I many directions would be an understatement!

Genre-wise, I’ve got biography, memoir, poetry, historical fiction, autofiction, and sci-fi covered, an impressive variety for me!

I’m tickled pink to have had the opportunity to share my favorite children’s book author/illustrator of all time with the kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms at Mary Hogan Elementary School today. Rosemary Wells has been a mythical figure in my family since the 90’s for her depiction of three little bunnies having bad days who are comforted by simple pleasures bestowed upon them by the Bunny Queen, Janet.

Today, before a rapt audience of littluns, Wells shared a video tour of her studio and read aloud her yet-to-be-released Handbook of Kindness. What an extreme pleasure it was to witness her magic at work on a new generation, and to send each of them, 102 in all, home with a brand-new, personally inscribed book.

Many thanks are due to .kravitz and all the wonderful, warm, and patient educators who serve our community.

Yeah, sorry. Not asking my staff to take any risks in order to be open Monday. I don’t know what the accumulation will be, but I know it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Instead of shopping on Monday, perhaps take a few minutes to reflect on what’s happening in our country. Instead of reading that new book you had in mind, perhaps write an angry letter to your congressional delegation. We will gladly forego a day’s revenue to keep our people safe.

Being unwell is bad enough. Having to advocate for oneself or a loved one inside a broken system is salt in the proverbial wound. Former attorney and patient advocate Rebecca Bloom has written a book to help. She will be in Middlebury next week to lead, alongside Otter Creek Yoga’s Joanna Colwell, a special program (intended for women but open to all genders) to assist you in navigating the practical and emotional challenges of serious illness.

The $40 fee covers the two hour class and a copy of Bloom’s book, When Women Get Sick: An Empowering Approach for Getting the Help You Need. Subsidies available by request to [email protected]

My job today was opening boxes, but I’d have strongly preferred to have been home reading this lovely epistolary novel. Read it. The Corespondent, by Virginia Evans.

Bill McKibben’s new book is out today and we have SIGNED COPIES! (at the link in our profile)

Rebecca Solnit calls “Here Comes the Sun,” a “history, a handbook, a hopeful look at the energy revolution that’s already well underway.”

“Here Comes the Sun” tells the story of the sudden spike in power from the sun and wind—and the desperate fight of the fossil fuel industry and their politicians to hold this new power at bay. McKibben traces the arrival of this plentiful, inexpensive energy and shows how it is more than just a path out of the climate crisis: it is a chance to reorder the world on saner and more humane grounds.

There’s no place I’d rather be than right here, but I would rather be reading more of Susan Orleans’ fantastic memoir than doing my daily restock.
