I've created a new blog to try to keep the book conversation going and to support writers everywhere. I just posted my first post! I am technically challenged but I'm going to try...I hope you'll subscribe...just bear with me until I figure it out! It's called Genieology and here's the link...
Here is the link to our announcement that we are closing. I will miss you all very much, but the dream lives on and perhaps someday, with your support, I can do this again. Thank you for everything. Watch this space for more news.
I've been irritated for a long time about the whole 'chick lit' designation -- it's always sounded like a put down to me -- and up pops this blog entry that pretty much says it all. Click on the link to read the whole entry from NPR's Linda Holmes.
A recent debate over book reviews and the ubiquity of similar Brooklyn writers stresses the desperate need to put away the term "chick lit" forever.
Tony Blair's autobiography, My Journey, is Waterstone's (England's version of the evil empire) fastest selling political autobiography in publishing history! Here's the New York Times review.
Tony Blair’s memoir, “A Journey,” sheds little light on his political vision or on why he took Britain to war against Iraq.
The Washington Post reviews John Vaillant's The Tiger, a riveting, almost epic story of a Siberian white tiger.
THE TIGER A True Story of Vengeance and Survival By John Vaillant Knopf. 329 pp. $26.95 Though it's the world's largest and most deadly cat, the tiger does not have an easy life. It kills with its mouth, dodging flailing hooves and slashing tusks. Compared with a wild boar or a moose, an unarmed...

An advance copy of a novel due out next week sets off shock waves.
On this day in 1847, Charlotte Bronte sent her manuscript for Jane Eyre to her publisher, but under a pseudonym, Currer Bell. Many reviewers hated the book. Just shows you that critics aren't always right. Read what you love and never mind the reviews.
Bestseller list for this week...not much changed, but look beyond the top ten. There are some gems here.
In Julia Stuart's The Tower, The Zoo and The Tortoise, Balthazar Jones is a Beefeater who lives in the Tower of London with his loving wife, H**e, and his 120-year-old pet tortoise. When he's tasked with setting up a menagerie within the tower to house the queen's many exotic animals, life at the t...

Here is a link to the New York Times review of Eat, Pray, Love (the movie). What did you think of the book? I would love to know your frank and honest opinion.
“Eat Pray Love” is a sumptuous and leisurely adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling memoir of post-divorce globe-trotting.
Here's another review of The Tower, The Zoo and the Tortoise, from The Washington Post.
Usually, one must wait in frustratingly long lines to see the treasures of the Tower of London. But a delightfully zany and touching novel, "The Tower, the Zoo, and the Tortoise," by the British writer Julia Stuart, has jumped the queue to take readers on a fictional romp through the Tower's realm.

Carol Hiassen is back at last with a new adult book. Star Island takes on the cult of celebrity that is our national obsession, and is dealt with in the author's usual hilarious and entertaining style. Hiassen fans will be glad to know the Skink makes an appearance. Click on the link below and read the NPR review
Vacuous pop stars, a hygiene-challenged photographer and corrupt politicians all play a part in Carl Hiaasen's new satire of the industry that both makes and breaks celebrities.
Alexander McCall Smith should be declared a national treasure in Britain--and here. His books may not be Literature (with a capital L) but they have charm, wit and style--things that are in short supply these days. Check out the Post's review of his latest, Corduroy Mansions.
CORDUROY MANSIONS By Alexander McCall Smith Pantheon. 368 pp. $24.95

On this day in 1930 a memorial seance was held for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle at London's Royal Albert hall, six days after his death. The famous medium Estelle Roberts was supposed to deliver a message to the author's family, who afterwards claimed she did. A skeptical reporter stated, "I should like to have heard Sherlock Holmes examining the medium...for the methods employed were hardly reminiscent of Baker Street."
Is anyone out there interested in a Writer's Retreat, to be held at the Middleburg Country Inn? I'm trying to measure the level of interest before I go full speed ahead...Would love some feedback...and thanks!

At 9 years old, Rose Edelstein discovers a secret talent -- the ability to sense people's true emotions through the food they make -- in The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake.
This book about a girl who can taste people's feelings in the food they cook is, according to Publisher's Weekly, a "coming-of-age story story [that] makes a bittersweet dish, brimming with a zesty, beguiling talent." Library Journal says the author "deconstructs one of our most pleasurable activities, eating, and gives it a whole new flavor. She smooths out the lumps and grittiness of life to reveal its zest."
We're open and it's cool inside. Come into Books & Crannies and say hello. You can also take a look at our new bargain books section and have a cup of coffee on us. We have a lot of new arrivals, too. The best thing to do in this weatheris curl up with a good book.
