Mary Ann Stevens Talmadge, 80 years old, of Coral Gables, Florida, passed away peacefully on Sunday in her home. She was the founder of Dunbar Old Books, a used and rare bookstore, as well as an avid collector of Miami memorabilia and a lover of native Florida wildlife and plants.

Born in Homestead, Florida, in 1942, Mary Ann graduated from Southwest High School in 1960 and received a bachelor’s degree in art history from Florida State University, where she was active in opera productions and the civil rights movement. While in high school she worked as a waitress at Tyler’s Restaurant in South Miami, and later worked in the archives of the Miami Herald. She published the newsletter of the Miami Memorabilia Collectors’ Club, was an avid painter, and, in 1993, founded Dunbar Old Books.

She is predeceased by her husband, Thomas W. Talmadge, and survived by her son, Andrew S. Phillips, daughter, Eva Talmadge, daughter-in-law, Laura Phillips, son-in-law, Matt Schwartz, and grandchildren Jessica, Moses, and Sarah.

Services will be held at Van Orsdel in Coral Gables on Saturday, May 20th, at 10:30 a.m. A memorial gathering will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Dunbar Old Books, 7063 SW 46th Street, Miami, Florida, and will be open to all.

Instead of flowers, her family requests donations be made to Audubon Florida.
