What is BLW? If you’re a new or expecting mom you probably see “BLW” all over the web.
BLW stands for baby-led weaning and it is one of the more popular trends for feeding babies these days. So what is it?
🥄 BLW introduces age-appropriate foods to a baby’s diet. It does not replace breastmilk or formula nor is it intended to truly provide the nutrition a baby needs prior to 1 year. As the saying goes, “Food before 1 is just for FUN!”
🥄 BLW fosters a spirit of independence in young babies because it teaches them how to feed themselves.
🥄 BLW introduces different flavors and textures to a child’s diet early. For some, this can help encourage more adventurous eating (read less picky) down the road!
🥄 BLW helps babies develop oral motor control. I personally noticed that my son learned how to push food that was too big to swallow out of his mouth within the first week of introducing BLW.
Why is it so great?
✅ Babies learn how to eat independently very early (easier meal times!)
✅ Babies, for the most part, can eat what you’re eating or some version of it. This makes dinner prep or dining out easier.
✅ Babies try a variety of foods so it can help prevent (but not guarantee) less picky eaters later on.
✅ It helps develop fine motor skills! In this picture you can see seven-month old Jackson already mastering his pincer grip!
✅ Some experts suggest that implementing allergens earlier into a baby’s diet can actually help reduce the baby’s likelihood of developing a food allergy later in life. *Always talk to a pediatrician before implementing new foods*
When can I begin?
⏰ Talk to your pediatrician before implementing new foods or methods of feeding!
Signs of readiness can include:
👶🏻 Baby can sit up with little or no support
👶🏻 Baby has good control over his head and neck
👶🏻 Baby shows interest in your food
👶🏻 Baby is able to reach out for things of interest to them
👶🏻 Many experts recommend waiting at least six months before beginning to introduce solids!
My son loves octopus, lamb, curry, bananas, chicken, shrimp, peppers, clementines, pickled ginger, puffs, and more! So far he just doesn’t like carrots 🥕
