Busy days turn into busy weeks, especially in the late spring/early summer with bees in the yard. A week ago today, we did our first splits of the season, taking from our strongest colonies to create new colonies, and installed Italian queens. We hope to have these new colonies rolling by mid June so they can help pollinate pumpkins!

Our first post in quite some time! It's the beginning of our '22 season and things are in the beginning stages of going full tilt!

Our McIntosh apples, crab apples, plums, and dandelions are starting to fully bloom and our queens are adjusted to their new homes and beginning to build robust colonies/brood nests! We look forward to continuing the nice stretch of beautiful weather!

We don't want it to be but with today being possibly the last truly warm weather day for a while, we spent most of the day moving hives into wintering groups and checked/ prepped them for their long winter. We are hoping with all the hard work put in, we see them come out on the other side!

We have not posted a lot this season as it's been such a busy year with the bees and family events but wanted to take a breath and reflect back on what it has been.

We started with three hives this spring and end the season with 10!

The weather here in West Central WI allowed for the bees to collect a lot of pollen and nectar and made for a great season. In all we ended the season with a harvest of roughly 340 lbs of raw honey!

We would like to say thank you to our community, friends, and family for supporting our family business over the last year as it's not possible without your help and we look forward to the many years to come!

Today was honey extracting day at the farm! May 1st-onward has been a week in-week out grind between adding space for colony expansion on our established hives and tending to our nursery apiary hives for next season's replacements but days like today make it so worth while and sweet!

Yesterday we received our 6 new queen bees from Lappe's Bee Supply for installing in our newly split bee colonies to grow our apiary for the coming years.

We are bringing in new genetics with these queens and are looking forward to seeing the differences in breeds once they are established.

Healthy bees = happy honey making bees. One of the biggest threats to a honey bee colony is the Varroa Destructor, a mite that works like a tick on bees. Today we went through all of our colonies and treated by vaporizing oxalic acid that kills the mites and has proven no effects to the bees. Here's to healthy bees!
