ST.CROIX ROD SUMMER FISHING CONTEST begins Fri June 5th and runs through August 28 (c attached rules)! It’s free!! Weekly enteries for adults and kids, have a chance to win a $10 Gift Certificate! When the contest ends, in the kids division each entry wins a $25 gift certificate for biggest fish in each species division and the adults have a random chance at winning a $300+ St.Croix Rod and fishing package!!

The weekend bite remained steady on walleyes, crappie and bluegills which were up shallow along w/Smallies defending beds! I had one report this morning of crappies sucking flies off the surface next to a dock! Good luck fishing!!

The bite has been really good all week for all four guides out of our shop! “Doc”’s guide service did well in 10’ flats of wood w/Invasion jigs and XL fatheads, his crew r good customers of ours too - especially the Luke Vickers who’s “King of the Northwoods”🎣👍🏼, Clay Mudge and Josh Dunlap who bagged many walleyes w/Doc!

Dale Anderson did well on panfish and walleyes w/his couple he had out, fishing 6’ flats in wood too using Invasion Jigs and XL fatheads!

Don Pemble landed a nice bag of panfish, northern and nice walleye in 5’ w**ds using Invasion Jigs and XL Fatheads too!!

Jeff Robl also reported a few good days, catching eyes a little deeper on Wed along river/lake basin channels in 11-15’ in wood also using Invasion jigs and XL Fatheads!

Crappie r still up shallow, gills r coming into spawn as r Smallies - good times in the shallows will b had this week for all species! Good luck fishing!!

We got a few really good updates through the week from good customers fishing the flowage! Ted Peterson and son Kyle did really well on walleyes late in the day til dark fishing rocky shorelines- using Mud minnows in jigs earlier on and then switching to swim baits on 4’ rocks til dark! Kyle caught a 28.5” walleye on a Mud minnow/jig and videoed the release of that awesome fish! That’s what real fishers do w/trophy spawners like this! Thanks u guys for doing that!!

Then the northern were cooperating for Nick and Kimmay Meyer from IL, they did great all week using #5 Mepps and caught several 35”+ northern! Awesome fish and they also released those big northern which is fantastic- thanks for your conservation of those big girls!! Crappies r still spawning I had a great report yesterday on them and a few gills starting to go shallow! SMALLIES r rocking too!!

Hoping all our Veterans had a wonderful day knowing how much we appreciate your service and all those who came before you ensuring all of us 250 years of democratic freedom👏💕🇺🇸!

There were a lot of vacationers in the Mercer area as we were packed since last Wed and we would like to thank you all for supporting us over the past 27 years it’s incredible!! The thousands of Facebook followers is amazing too - u all rock!!

The fishing was good for most! Many fishers all over the place, catching a lot of crappies, and Smallies, a few bluegill reports and the walleye bite improved w/the stable warmer weather! We were able to fish Sun thanks to our great friend Jerry2 (along w/Keewin’s great help) who covered the shop so we could b off!

We got a few handfuls of crappies up shallow in w**ds - water temps were 61 in 2ft! (Ideal crappie spawn temp is 62-64) - the walleyes were mostly in wood varied depth 12-14” and Jerry got one nice smallie 17.5” - Smallies should b prespawn this week with highs in the 80’s! Colin got the biggest crappie he released the 13 1/4” and we kept 6 I cleaned - no eggs or milt!! We got everything on varied size fatheads!

We finally got much needed rain! Close to an inch on our side of town and the vegetation is thankful as it’s been greening up in hours! Cool temps again today and tomorrow but warming all weekend - next week’s temps will b in the 80’s! The water temps have been in the mid-high 50’s so far and the fishing has been decent for a few customers on the Gile Flowage, getting walleyes and a few crappies up shallow all on fatheads! TFFlowage- Several crappie reports of a spattering of prespawners in 6-8’ they should come in fast thru the next 5 days!! The warm up will bring the Smallies in on bedding areas and the Muskellunge should b done! SHALLOW for them all!

Guide, Don Pemble did good w/clients Todd and Robert - also good customers of ours- a few days ago - wind blown shorelines w/wood invasion jigs and our XL fats, half a crawler worked too! Pollen is everywhere, gnats have been hatched - next r the mosquitoes and black flies- no complaining we were buried in snow since Nov so bring on the biting😂👍🏼🤣!!

Well the wind is relentless!! RED FLAG WARNING HERE!! So no burning, humidity is 20%- insane in Mercer in May!! 🤞🤞 the rain makes it our way! One of our Fishing Guides, Dale Anderson took out our dear friend Virginia fishing the Flowage yesterday and they got into some real nice perch! Congrats Virginia on an awesome fishing day, you’ve earned it @ 90 years young!

She has been coming to Mercer since she was a child fishing w/her parents! We got to b good friends in 2005 after Jerry’s bad accident as she helped us out in many ways and supported me and the kids while he was healing! We r so happy u could make it back up here! Virginia is also an amazing yarn spinner as we sell her beautiful woolen yarn in our Looney Beans Coffee Shop!

Well we got a spattering of rain but desperately need more! The walleye bit has been steady but u have to move and work for them! Guide Don Pemble was in this morning and he’s been getting walleyes shallow, w**d beds and wood on the flowage! Jigs and Xl fats or Muds and I had a few reports on crankbaits working! Customers fished the town lakes and had some luck on northern and bass! The water temps r holding in the mid-high 50’s but will shoot up over the next few days w/daytime temps in the 70’s! That means the crappie should b staging to spawn w/ideal temps @ 64-68!

A few incidental musky have been caught-

**We have discouraged people from pursuing Musky with the early opener this year! Pressuring them while spawning is not wise, we don’t agree w/the state on this and ask that it be returned to Memorial Day Opener! With budget cuts to stocking taking effect this year for Musky and Walleye- it seems ignorant to create a double negative for the muskellunge!!

We have restocked Lang Lures for the season, hand made/tuned musky lures which are all one of a kind! Stop by and check them out!!

We have restocked CRAZELAB Spinnerbaits! They r hand made by Luke Nauman! They r well built and catch everything! We added his Weedless hair jigs and Chatter style jig baits too, also great quality and effective for bass and walleye for sure! Stop by and check them out there’s a great color selection! He landed a nice bass on a chatter lure on opener!

Cool and windy today again! We r in high fire danger - PERMITS R CANCELED!! so b vigilant about not burning ANYTHING and smokers do the earth a favor and put the butts where they belong!!

Well Happy Opener- our 27th year w/the bait shop! Cool and windy! The overall reports on the Flowage were on the slow side, scattered fish w/out a good pattern! We caught them in a 6’ flat, drop off to 16’ in the river channel! We got a few Smallies, northern snakes and crappie and a few jumbo perch besides the 7 walleyes. Guide Mike Sabec caught eyes on 4’ rocks that were still spawning, customers limited out in 6’ brush (summer spot), Guide Dale Anderson caught some shorts and kept two nice fish! Most everything came on XL Fats or walleye mix on Weedless jigs however Colin caught the 19”er on a VMC moon eye jig! Water temp was 54 yesterday @ 3pm! Trees r breaking buds and the gnats hatched!

Colin and his buddies also caught some whitefish, a 24” Laker and Jared got the big eye and they caught a few other eyes on trout lake at daybreak on Sat (22 degrees)! Supposed to b cool all week, if the wind lays down the fishing should b decent all week!
