Kenkoy (1929), created by Tony Velasquez and Romualdo Ramos for Liwayway, is the first icon of Philippine komiks. Featuring slick hair and Americanized fashion, the satirical character satirized colonial influence and introduced the word kenkoy, meaning “joker”, into the language.

We’re hanging out live with National Book Award-winning artist Lucia Asul to discuss her graphic novel, Night Gate Vol. 1, right before it debuts in the US at Worldcon with Hot Tropiks and Raygun!

Lucia is one of the most prominent dark fantasy and psychological horror artists in the Philippines today. Her graphic novels blend surreal imagery with intense psychological tension, making her an essential voice for anyone exploring modern Filipino comics.

Rexy Dorado from Raygun Press will also join the stream to talk about introducing these stories to American readers.

We’re getting closer to Worldcon and I keep thinking about Pinoy sci-fi media and impact that Alimuom had on it. Directed by Keith Sicat, Alimuom (2018) is a Filipino sci-fi film set in a future where toxic environments force Earth farming to be outlawed.
