Hi friends! We just wanted to let y'all know that we've decided to take a step back from Instagram and Facebook this year as we re-examine our relationship to social media. Although we enjoy sharing scenes from our garden with y'all, we've come to the realization that we don't want to spend our precious time scrolling on screens - and we don't feel good about encouraging others to do so either.

This is an experiment and we'll see how it goes. In the meantime, if you want to get in touch with us, please email us at [email protected]

Thanks so much for your understanding 💕

- Katherine & Dorian

Since we posted a story about hanging up handmade bird seed ornaments, we've gotten questions about how to make them. Below, we've shared our recipe, which is adapted from Julia Watkins (.living.well)

Let's keep our feathered friends fed during this cold snap!

***

MATERIALS

1/4 cup unflavored powdered gelatin

Muffin tin and/or silicone baking cups

1/2 cup cold water

1/2 cup boiling water (at least)

2 1/2 cups birdseed (at least)

Biodegradable twine

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large bowl, mix the gelatin into the cold water until mostly dissolved. Add the boiling water and continue to mix until the gelatin is completely dissolved. (The consistency should be very runny, just ever so slightly thicker than water.) Add the birdseed, about 1 cup at a time, and mix well so that the gelatin mixture coats each seed. (You may need up to 4 cups of bird seed.)

2. Fill each muffin tin cup about three-quarters of the way with birdseed mixture. Using your fingers or a spoon, press the seed mixture firmly into the cup. (You can fill the silicone cups all the way to the top - they're easier to get out!) Make a hole for the twine by pushing the straw through the seed mixture and rotating it. Be sure to leave a thick edge between the hole and the top of the ornament.

3. Place the muffin tin and/or silicone baking cups in the refrigerator for a few hours, until the ornaments harden and gel. Once set, remove the ornaments from the tin by inserting a knife around the rim and gently pushing up. Thread twine through the holes and hang the ornaments on tree branches in your yard.

Today is finally the day! Our tulip bulbs have been pre- chilling for the last 2 1/2 months and it's now time to plant them out.

We pre-chill our bulbs for a pretty long stretch of time in order to ensure that our tulips get enough cold exposure before the warm days of early spring arrive. Tulips like cold conditions - something we can't easily guarantee in Memphis. We do everything we can to make sure our tulips bloom on tall, strong stems come spring, including faking a bit of winter weather. (If the winter isn't cold enough for long enough, tulips can be very short or have deformed flowers.)

This month has flown by! We've been so busy with wholesale orders, CSA deliveries, and keeping up with harvesting that we've been pretty quiet here.

As May draws to a close, we'll be turning our attention to fall blooms. We've got a lot of prep work to do to ensure that we've got plenty of dahlias, heirloom chrysanthemums, and other gorgeous flowers available later this season!

So, If we're a bit quiet for the next few weeks and you're wondering what we're up to, we're probably weeding, sowing seeds, and cleaning up from this spring!

This is our first year growing Icelandic poppies, and we're smitten. There's something absolutely magical about their crepe paper petals and glowing, golden centers.

Poppies require daily harvesting. In order to ensure that they have the longest vase life possible, we've got to pick them just as the sepals start to crack open. If they're left to unfurl in the garden, the petals will get bruised and the pollinators will make a beeline (no pun intended 😉) for the delicious nectar inside. When that happens, they'll only last a day or two inside.

The official start of our growing season is finally here! Now that days have gotten longer, our garden is starting to swell - stems are lengthening and buds are forming - and each day our plants are getting bigger. It feels like any day we’ll have the most beautiful explosion of flowers!

April also marks the beginning of our DIY Flowers availability, which we offer during our main growing season (April - October). What are DIY Flowers? Well, if you’re looking to do your own flowers for a special gathering or event, we’ll curate a bucket filled with a selection of locally-grown, fresh-cut flowers and greenery that are perfect for putting together your own bouquets and arrangements.

These buckets offer a great opportunity to get your hands on specialty blooms - like ranunculus and dahlias - that can be difficult to grow or reliably source from the grocery store. In addition to familiar flowers, we also regularly include flowers that may be less familiar like snapdragons or larkspur.

It’s early days still, but spring is off to a great start! We’ll be making our first Spring Bouquet CSA deliveries for our 8 week members in just a few days. Those lucky members will be getting the last of our absolutely gorgeous can’t-believe-they’re-not-peonies tulips.

There’s still time to join our 4 week flower subscription for weekly bouquet deliveries throughout May! For more details, please visit our website (www.wildearthmemphis.com) 💐

Before we get too far into the growing season, we wanted to give a big shout out to our community of local flower farmers:

We're so glad that we have friends like you to talk to, commiserate with, and laugh about flowers, soil, plant health, pests, etc. - all the stuff that would bore everyone else we know to tears!

We can't wait to see what y'all do this year, and we're looking forward to learning and growing alongside you this season 💞

These 'Aveyron' tulips are magical: each bloom looks like a mini peony. We might be biased, but we think these are the most stunning tulips we've ever grown.
