It's officially the first day of spring today, but across much of Nebraska, it feels more like the first day of summer. With temperatures quickly heating up this week and forecasted to get downright steamy this weekend, here are some tips on how to take care of your trees in hot, droughty weather.

1. A tree that's been planted within the last 1-3 years needs supplemental water in unseasonably hot weather.
2. Evergreens are especially susceptible to winter drought and should be watered as early as possible in the spring.
3. Water your young trees with 5 gallons of water per week during the establishment period (which can last up to 3 years). If it rains at least an inch per week, that amount of supplemental water can be reduced.
4. Water your tree around the drip line, which extends out to the edge of the tree's canopy, rather than putting all the water at the base of the trunk.
5. Add a generous layer of mulch around the base and out to the drip line to help reduce evaporation from the soil and to protect the tree from mower and trimmer damage.
6. Plant species that are native to Nebraska: bur, white and red oak, hackberry and ponderosa and limber pines are particularly tough when it comes to drought.
7. Don't give up on tree planting; as temperatures rise, it's more important than ever to increase tree canopy and bring beneficial shade to our communities!
