There are lot of things I love about Maynard. Top of the list are all the wonderful people living here and doing their darnedest to make it a more beautiful, magical place. It’s a pretty rare occurrence these days when you can leave your house, be out in your community, and not have to pay a fee to do it. Yes, we have great businesses doing wonderful things, but often it’s (understandably) behind a paywall in some form or another.
It seems more and more that gone are the days when not EVERYTHING costs dollar dollar billz. Except— when I think about it— Maynard actually has SO MANY options to get out of your house and into these streets just for the joy of it.
We’ve got parades! Street festivals! Free concerts in the park! Murals! Giant lawn games! Galleries putting on shows! Open studios! A cool ass river! So. Many. Trails! Beautiful flower pots to marvel at courtesy of the garden club! Free craft nights at the library! (New, follow ). And yes, even us small businesses sometimes have offerings not contingent upon a sale (Tastings! Readings! Street performers! Giveaways! Gatherings!)
This is a long post about a little things, but one of the best parts of living here, it’s knowing that if you’re feeling bored, isolated, or in need of connection— you just gotta leave your house at the same time other people are leaving their houses. And who knows? Maybe your down the street friends are sitting in the driveway, fixing bikes, eating out of a giant bowl of salted kohlrabi. Maybe the kids next door are releasing the butterflies they watched grow from a chrysalis. Maybe you made too much hummus and someone else made too much bread, and now it’s a porch party.
It’s not a village unless there are villagers, my friends. I want to see you out there.
Not today, though. Air quality is trash. But definitely bring some cut watermelon to your elderly neighbor to make sure she’s alright. In my experience, the intimacy of the reach is easier when your hands are full. 💋
Ps. Who is going to craft night at the library? It’s a bring your own project situation. 🙋🏻
