HORSE HAIR RAKU
I make these pieces on the prairie of North Dakota. The process starts with a raw clay piece. It is put into a kiln and the temperature is raised up to over 1300 degrees. Then, while red hot the piece is carefully removed one at a time and the hair is then applied. The piece is very fragile when lifted out of the kiln. The grey in the background is the result of the smoke from the burnt horse hair. There is a short period of time to burn the hair onto the piece because the piece begins to cool the instant it is removed from the kiln. Each is an original masterpiece and never are two alike.

In the warm summer sun, I move my kiln outside to start the process of making RAKU. I paint each piece with a special RAKU paint, then heat the pieces to 1700 degrees. One by one I pull the pieces from the kiln and hold it into a metal can draped with newspaper. The piece inturn ignites the paper and is engulfed in fire. Next I quickly put the lid onto the can and smother the fire. I leave the piece in the can for about one hour or until cool. Now it is ready to open and discover the art work that the process created. Glaze and fire makes each masterpiece very unique and never are two alike.
