John Hazel and his little Red Ranger...by the time this photo was taken in the mid-1980's, John had already figured out what his life was about: get in the truck and go fishing. With all the intention of a Buddhist monk, (minus the austerity measures) John did just that. The trucks have changed over the years, but his singular dedication to the craft of steelhead fly-fishing has not. A fifty-year career as a guide, co-owner of Deschutes Angler, and a long history in several campaigns to protect and restore steelhead waters are worth hearing about. Come see and hear John's stories, on stage alongside Bill Bakke, Bill McMillan, Steve Pettit and Randle Stetzer, at The Mission Theater, 1624 NW Glisan St., Tuesday June 9th. Since I filmed this one hour ago, I got new intel that green drakes hatched in good numbers at various sites on the river yesterday. This may continue over the next few days despite the windy conditions. Cool and windy does not keep the mayflies from hatching. Salmonfly hatch is still going strong, though the big bugs are currently hiding in the grasses.

The bugs are here!!! Not only are we seeing Salmonflies, but also golden stones, little yellow sallies, March browns, BWOs, Caddis flies, midge and more! The bugs are thick in the Maupin area - not fully out yet in the Warm Springs area.
