Finally printed off a key card for my 2024 reading blanket! I’ve also finish the month of January portion!

What I’m doing:
I decided on a granny rectangle. This way it starts off small and gets larger as it goes and I feel like I can keep up with it better.
Each color corresponds to a certain star rating. Once I finish a book and rate it I’ll crochet one row in that color. Every two rows of color will be the accent color just to break it up and give a little bit of uniformity.
As for the color choices I wanted my blanket to have a little bit of a monochromatic look to it so I chose colors within the same color family and one for a little pop.

What I’m using:
•Colors for 1-4.5⭐️ ratings are from Joann’s Big Twist line. Purple,Pale Peach,Heather Purple, Lilac, Grape
•The sparkly color used for 5⭐️ reads is the Mainstays line in color Sweet Violet from Walmart that I already had in my yarn stash.
•The tweed color is I Love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby also from my yarn stash.
•I’m using a 4.5mm hook as I wanted the stitches be a little bit tighter than normal.
I have a few other yarny/book friends tagged below that are making their own reading blankets. Each one of us is doing something different.

If you are also making a reading blanket I’d love to see how yours is coming along!

Snowy day means messing around with this granny square yarn by .

Im actually really liking this yarn. It’s a fun instant gratification project that I’ve been doing between designing a new pillow cover and working on my book blanket. (You’ll see both soon)
If you crochet on the tighter side like I do you may struggle a little bit with getting the colors to line up correctly. I’ve had to frog every square I’ve made and really payed attention to my tension and how high I make my stitches because not only do I crochet tight I always make my stitches on the shorter side. Not exactly sure why but could be because most of the things I make/design need to be a tight fabric and the way this granny square yarn is made is the standard sizing for a double crochet stitch. But either way I don’t mind frogging to get the colors to line up as I’d rather do that then tie off and add a new color every row and have a million ends to weave in.
I’m also not sure what I’m going to make with all of these squares. The package says you can make up to 14 squares with it so we will see if that’s how many I end up with.
Have you tried the new granny square yarn? What are you going to make with all these squares!?

Happy New Year!!!
2023 was an interesting year for me especially the last 3 months. My father was diagnosed with dementia in 2022 and his condition has gotten worse the last few months so I’ve been seeing him more. On top of that I’ve had constant ear and sinus infections to the point that my hearing has gone bad and that’s been an adjustment period so I haven’t been extremely present in this space.

What I would like to accomplish in 2024 for freebirdthreadsco.co:

1. Release at least 2 patterns. I’ve made a few but haven’t written any up and I’d like to accomplish doing that.

2. Post more on here. I’ve become slack with posting progress photos or even finished pieces.

3. Possibly branch out and offer finished pieces online on Etsy or even the new Micheals maker site.

4. Not be so hard on myself. I haven’t released any patterns in a long time and that’s because I have this negativity about not being good enough to do so because what I like to create isn’t trendy. This year I’m going to try and get out of that funk and do what I like to do.
Anyway if you read all of that Thank You so much!
Here’s to a new year and new possibilities!

Day 12 which is the last day of the .
Today’s color is gold as well as rainbow!
Book I chose was Crochet and Cauldrons by The title is gold and she’s holding a gold object. Plus I thought the crochet aspect was fitting. This is the 3rd book in the Vampire Knitting Club Mysteries.
Pattern I chose was the Boho Rainbow Throw Pillow. This has been my most popular pattern so I had to include it as the rainbow prompt.
Book Synopsis
Every family has annoying relatives; mine just happen to be undead.
My Grandmother, Agnes Bartlett, used to own Cardinal Woolsey’s knitting shop in Oxford then died and left her shop to me, without informing me that she wasn’t actually dead. She’s a vampire and part of the world’s strangest craft circle – the Vampire Knitting Club.

As you might imagine, this means she’s free to interfere in how I run the business that used to be hers. She’s trying to teach me to knit and it’s not going well. She’s also trying to teach me how to be a witch, since it turns out I’m from a long line of witches. Another tiny detail about my family that no one ever told me, along with the long-lost witch cousins I recently discovered.

But I’m learning. I’ve got my family spell book, my black cat familiar, some powers that sometimes scare me, and an interesting new group of friends.

My archaeologist parents are coming to visit and bringing me a gift I could do without.

So, to recap, I run a knitting shop and I can’t knit. I’m a beginning witch who can’t always control her cat, never mind her magic, and my love life is as tangled as the last sock I tried to knit. Oh, and for some reason, I keep getting involved in murder investigations. Good thing I have my vampire knitters to help sniff out clues.

At least I’ve finally hired the perfect assistant, a real demon with the crochet hook. Or is she too perfect?
Peep the card and cozy mystery book club sticker. Angela sends out Christmas cards if you sign up and always adds a cute sticker or two.

Axel’s parents are visiting for the holiday and Pepper wants things to go smoothly. But when his mom insults the town Scrooge things turn rocky fast. Worse, when the town Scrooge is murdered, fingers quickly point to Axel’s mom. Now it’s up to Axel and Pepper to find the real murderer before his mom winds up paying the price for a crime she didn’t commit. Can Pepper and Axel save the day or will the magical season of Christmas turn into the deadliest ever known to Magnolia Cove?

Day 9 of color is silver!
This was a little hard but I ended up choosing The Hound and the Fury by Sandra Orchard as my silver book pick. The grey on some parts of the cover are pretty close to silver so 🤷🏻‍♀️. This is book 17 in the Amish Inn Mystery series and it looks like there’s a few different authors writing this series. Have you read it yet?
Pattern I chose was the Ripple Cloth. You can find this pattern for free in my highlights!
Book Synopsis:

Day 7 of color is Yellow!
I chose A Glimmer of a Clue by for todays color prompt. I love the bright yellow title and fairy sparkle dust.
This is the second book in A Fairy Garden Mystery Series which happens to be one of my favorite cozy mystery series. I’ve read all of the books so far (there are 4 right now and one is coming out next year). I love this world and how each book builds on the next. There’s a cat friend and a Sleuthing fairy that helps out our main character Courtney.
Pattern I chose was the Boho sun rug. This was the first pattern I came out with in 2020. They are fast and easy to make and look cute under mugs, candles and plants. You can find the pattern in my shop.
P.S. Did you find the little sleuthing keychain friend? He’s so cute.
Book Synopsis:

Courtney Kelly has a shop full of delights, a cat named Pixie, a green thumb—and a magical touch when it comes to garden design. But in Carmel-by-the-Sea, things aren’t all sweetness and fairy lights . . .

When Courtney’s friend Wanda gets into a ponytail-pulling wrestling match in public with a nasty local art critic, Courtney stops the fight with the help of a garden hose. But Lana Lamar has a talent for escalating things and creating tension, which she succeeds in doing by threatening a lawsuit, getting into yet another scuffle—in the midst of an elegant fundraiser, no less—and lobbing insults around like pickleballs.

Next thing Courtney knows, Lana is on the floor, stabbed with a decorative letter opener from one of Courtney's fairy gardens, and Wanda is standing by asking “What have I done?” But the answer may not be as obvious as it seems, since Wanda is prone to sleepwalking and appears to be in a daze. Could she have risen from her nap and committed murder while unconscious? Or is the guilty party someone else Lana’s ticked off, like her long-suffering husband? To find out, Courtney will have to dig up some dirt . . .

Day 5 of the and this day the color is black!
The Ghost of Lilly Pilly Creek by came to mind when I saw the color prompt. This is her debut cozy and I love the covers she chooses for her books. She’s currently writing the third one in the series.

Day 3 of the and todays color is white.
Now this book cover isn’t exactly white but it is snowing and there is a sled on snow and that’s white so I’m counting it.
Dachshund Through the Snow by is the first book in a trilogy. I’ve read all 3 a couple years ago and they were really cute. They are on the shorter side. This first book is about 150 pages but it gets the point across and they were fun holiday reads.
I paired it with one of the only beanies I’ve made that has white in it.
Pattern is the azalea beanie by
