High Action? Check Relief First.

Don’t lower the bridge until you read the neck.

When action suddenly feels high, the bridge may not be the real cause. Seasonal movement can add neck relief and raise the strings through the middle of the fretboard. Evaluate relief first, then adjust the bridge only after the neck is where it belongs.

Tuning Problems Start at the Nut.

Most tuning problems begin with friction at the nut, poor string installation, or strings that were never stretched properly. Before replacing tuners, check whether the strings move smoothly through the nut slots and whether the wraps are neat and secure.

This Ibanez S470DXQM in Transparent Lavender over this beautiful quilted top came in kind of rough. The Zero Resistance tremolo was covered in grime and dust, the rest of the body was in the same condition, and it had several high frets.

We removed the tremolo, disassembled, cleaned, polished and lubricated all the moving parts. The frets were leveled, crowned and polished to a mirror finish. The entire body was cleaned, polished and oiled to showroom condition.

After a setup with 10-46 gauge strings, it plays and looks like a dream!

I finally soldered in a new stereo, 8 Ohm output jack that was damaged during a load out over 20 years ago!

After a quick cleaning, I fired it up with the original tubes it shipped with over 30 years ago!
