on this day in 1924, the united states "granted" us citizenship.
let that sit.
a government standing on stolen land,
handing out belonging
to people who were already here
who had been here for thousands of years
before there was a "here" to be a citizen of.
they didn't ask us.
they never do.
and that citizenship?
it didn't even come with the vote.
some states made us wait decades more
the last of them until 1962
to cast a ballot in the country
that claimed it welcomed us in 1924.
all while they were still cutting our hair,
stealing our children,
beating the language out of us in their schools.
you cannot grant a people permission
to belong to the land they came from.
we were never your citizens.
we are still our own nations.
we were here. we are here. we will be here.

Háŋ Mitákuye Oyás'iŋ. All my relations.
That's not just a greeting. It's a whole way of seeing. It means everything that was put here belongs here. The plants. The animals. The water. The people, all of them.
When I walk through a medicine garden, I don't see one plant ruling over the rest. Hante Chanhlogan, Ichahpe Hu, Unzizintka. Each one carries its own medicine. Each one rooted in the same ground. The garden isn't strong because everything in it is the same. It's strong because it's not. Pull pieces out and the whole thing gets weaker. That's not an opinion. That's how the land works. That's how creation was built.
People are no different.
Our LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit relatives belong here. They always have, long before colonization tried to teach us to be ashamed of our own. Loving them, making room for them, isn't new or trendy. It's a return to what we knew before someone told us otherwise.
Thinking you're above another being, deciding who gets to exist and who doesn't, that's colonizer thinking. The mind that looks at a whole living world and only sees something to rank and control. I don't carry that. It's not what I was taught, and it's not what I'll teach my children.
I was taught to give respect and love even to those who don't think or live like me. But I also get to choose who sits at my table. And I don't make a seat for hate.
You're welcome here. All of you.
Mitákuye Oyás'iŋ.

Híŋhaŋni laȟči.
we're in Wípazuka Wasté Wi the moon of the june berries. the name carries the teaching. the moon of sweetness, of abundance. the time the berries come and the land starts handing back what it spent all spring making.
but i'll be honest with you about what we're watching out here.
the berries don't keep the same calendar they used to. spring came two to three weeks early across our part of the midwest this year. leaves out early, blossoms out early, everything waking before it should. and that's not just a feeling the growing season here is about two weeks longer than it was in the 1950s, and southern minnesota keeps getting warmer and wetter, the rain coming harder and less even.
here's the hard part. waking early doesn't mean the frost is done. the plants come out of dormancy trusting the warmth, then a late cold snap moves through and catches the blossoms open. that's how you lose a berry season before it starts. early spring, late frost, then a summer that swings between too much rain and not enough.
2024 was the warmest year minnesota has ever recorded. you don't need a chart to feel it. you can feel it in how the seasons don't sit still anymore.
the old people watched the plants to know the time. the first bloom, the first berry, the cottonwood seed in the air. those markers still teach. but they're moving and that movement is the lesson now. it asks us to pay closer attention, not less.
so this moon, if you walk past a berry bush the wild rose along the ditch, the june berries, the chokecherries coming in take a minute. notice when they're really fruiting this year. not when the calendar says. when they actually do it. write it down if you can.
that watching is the old way of keeping time. it still works. it just asks more of us now than it used to.
Wípazuka Wasté Wi. the moon of sweetness. still sweet. just asking us to pay closer attention to keep it that way.

Yesterday the sun found me
and i let it.
hands deep in the beds,
carrying earth by the armful
to grow us food.
then the front yard
that flat green nothing,
that lawn they taught us to want
i tore it open with my own hands
and gave it back to medicine.
put my relatives in the ground
til the light went down.
came inside looking like
i'd been rolling in the soaked
heart of Uŋčí Makȟá.
mud to the elbows.
good dirt.
that's what surviving looks like
some days
filthy and grinning.
today the sky went grey and cool
and i didn't fight it.
LM work. laundry.
negotiations with a toddler
on the sacred matter of naps
and i won.
small victory.
i'll take it.
now she sleeps,
our furry ones curled close,
the whole little tȟiyóšpaye breathing slow.
this is the work.
food in the ground.
medicine where they wanted only lawn.
a child guarded while she dreams.
nothing dramatic about it.
just us,
still here,
still planting,
still raising the next ones up.
we were never supposed to make it this far.
and here we are
muddy,
tired,
unbroken.
