In our fourth installment of the Black Designers to Know series, we honor , current creative director of . Born into a Trinidadian-Jamaican family in Manchester, England, Davis came from fashionable roots. His father studied fashion design while his mother and sister were models. At age 6, Davis was taught how to use a sewing machine by his grandmother.

Davis officially launched his career in fashion after graduating from the . He assisted fellow black Brit designer Grace Wales Bonner before launching his eponymous label, Maximilian, in 2020. Maximilian debuted in spring 2021 as part of , the British incubator that helped jumpstart the careers of Kim Jones (Dior), Jonathan Anderson (Loewe & JW Anderson) and Simone Rocha. His first collection was to broaden perceptions and narratives of black identity.

Maximilian looks were shortly donned by Rihanna, Dua Lipa, Kim Kardashian and more. By early 2022, Maximilian had MatchesFashion, Fwrd, and Net-a-Porter as stockists. Adding to his major moves that year, Davis was named a semifinalist for the in 2022. However, he pulled out of the competition shortly before being named Creative Director for Salvatore Ferragamo in March.

With his appointment at Ferragamo, Davis is the only black designer at the helm of a major Italian fashion house, cementing his name in fashion history.

In our third installment of the Black Designers to Know series, we honor . A graduate of London’s acclaimed , Saunders takes a multidisciplinary approach to her designs, interrogating the tensions between masculinity and femininity. Citing her Jamaican and British background, she brings cross-cultural references into a unique and elevated take on menswear.

Her eponymous line, created in 2017, is focused on tailoring and suits in unexpected fabrications. A master of the sartorial, the seams on her garments are twisted and rushed, and hems are split. Her clothes evoke an emotional sensation, making you want to dress up and have fun, a welcome respite in this time.

In 2018, she was selected by the as “One to Watch.” In 2021, she won the Grand Prix Fashion Award, previously won by the likes of Martin Margiela, Anthony Vaccarello and Christophe Lemaire, by a panel including Phoebe Philo and Kerby Jean-Raymond. The award included a yearlong mentorship with Balenciaga CEO Cédric Charbit.

At the young age of 29, the designer joins the likes of Grace Wales Bonner and Martine Rose in increasing the representation of women of color in fashion.

In our third installment of the Black Designers to Know series, we honor . A native New Yorker born in Queens, LaQuan had always observed his grandmother and other female role models in his life, paving the way for his love of tailoring and showcasing and empowering the female body.

Rejected by FIT and Parsons, Smith, like many talent black designers before him, had to forge his own path in the industry. He formed an LLC making “LaQuan Smith 3D Leggings,” and he soon achieved success, with celebrities embracing his legging designss.

LaQuan’s penchant for sultry silhouettes and barely there looks soon sparked interest among the celebrity IT girl elite including Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian and Beyonce.

A style star in his own right, LaQuan Smith has also cultivated partnerships with luxury brands such as Moët & Chandon, becoming a global ambassador for the brand in 2019.

Cementing his status in the fashion world, Smith was nominated for the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year in 2022, and most recently the designer debuted his Fall 2023 runway show at NYFW in the opulent Rainbow Room where his flawless tailoring was on full display. Guest attendees included Lil Nas X, Kimora Lee Simmons and more.

With clientele spanning from Lagos to London, LaQuan continues to expand his global impact in the luxury landscape.

As a luxury retailer with a black q***r founder, we celebrate black talent 365 days a year! However, for Black History Month, we are paying special homage to some of the black designers that are breaking barriers and defying the odds.

Welcome to our 1st of a weekly Black Designers to Know series. First, is , creative director of . Growing up as an orphan in Bordeaux, France and later adopted by white parents (his biological parents are from Djibouti and Ethiopia), Rousteing’s story is one of triumph and overcoming the odds, and as a result, he is a fervent advocate for diversity in fashion.

Rousteing stepped into his role at Balmain in 2011 at the mere age of 25, making him the youngest creative director in Paris since the late Yves Saint Laurent, big shoes to feel indeed. Yet, despite his age, Olivier had already honed his design chops at Roberto Cavalli, ascending to head of womenswear before joining Balmain under his predecessor Christophe Decarnin. After taking over, he ushered in a digital revitalization of the brand and a more refined aesthetic, leading to a sevenfold increase in sales.

Eyeing opportunity to court new consumers at a lower price point, Rousteing recently inked a deal with Estée Lauder to launch in fall of 2024, featuring cosmetics and fragrances. In July of 2022, he guest designed for Jean Paul Gaultier for the Fall 2023 couture show.

Whether you’re in the Balmain army or just a fan of the IG celebrity, you can’t deny Olivier Rousteing’s design force and the impact he has made not only on Balmain but on the entire fashion industry.

For more on Rousteing, watch his documentary, Wonder Boy on , and shop Balmain and other great black designers on our BHM Edit on TheLuxeLend.com. (Link in bio)
