As a luxury retailer with a black q***r founder, we celebrate black talent 365 days a year! However, for Black History Month, we are paying special homage to some of the black designers that are breaking barriers and defying the odds.
Welcome to our 1st of a weekly Black Designers to Know series. First, is , creative director of . Growing up as an orphan in Bordeaux, France and later adopted by white parents (his biological parents are from Djibouti and Ethiopia), Rousteing’s story is one of triumph and overcoming the odds, and as a result, he is a fervent advocate for diversity in fashion.
Rousteing stepped into his role at Balmain in 2011 at the mere age of 25, making him the youngest creative director in Paris since the late Yves Saint Laurent, big shoes to feel indeed. Yet, despite his age, Olivier had already honed his design chops at Roberto Cavalli, ascending to head of womenswear before joining Balmain under his predecessor Christophe Decarnin. After taking over, he ushered in a digital revitalization of the brand and a more refined aesthetic, leading to a sevenfold increase in sales.
Eyeing opportunity to court new consumers at a lower price point, Rousteing recently inked a deal with Estée Lauder to launch in fall of 2024, featuring cosmetics and fragrances. In July of 2022, he guest designed for Jean Paul Gaultier for the Fall 2023 couture show.
Whether you’re in the Balmain army or just a fan of the IG celebrity, you can’t deny Olivier Rousteing’s design force and the impact he has made not only on Balmain but on the entire fashion industry.
