In pre-Columbian Andean societies, certain wall hangings called tupu or qullqa weren't just decorative—they doubled as encoded records of storage and lineage. Textiles hung in communal spaces used color bands and knot patterns to signal who owned stored goods, upcoming harvest cycles, or clan alliances—a visual ledger that circulated memory and economics without written language. Few people realize textiles served bureaucratic roles as well as ceremonial ones.
