Why do bag handles pull out?

You carry your new bag twice, and a handle starts to pull away. It is not your sewing machine. It is how the handle is attached.

Professional bags anchor every handle with a stitched square and an X through it, sewn through a reinforced layer underneath. The load spreads over the whole square instead of one seam line. It works on a standard home sewing machine.

Have you had a handle pull away? Where did it give way?

What keeps a duffle bag round?

The round side panel. When it is interfaced firmly and finished with a piped edge, the bag keeps its barrel shape. Topstitching along the seam keeps that edge crisp.

A tip you can try today:
Mark the round panel and the body at four matching points (think 12, 3, 6 and 9 on a clock) and pin those first. Clip the body's seam allowance every 1.5 cm (5/8 inch), stopping just before the stitching line. The body eases around the curve and the circle comes out smooth, without tucks.

This works on a standard home sewing machine. Sew slowly, with the circle facing down.

Have you sewn a round panel before? How did it go?

Bag design starts before the first stitch. Plan fabric, support and the seams where they meet.

Include folded allowances and additional pocket layers in your plan. Test the most demanding combination before final assembly.

Why does a handmade bag still look homemade?

Most of the time the sewing is fine. The difference is two steps many patterns leave out:

Structure: the right interfacing in the right places. Firm on the base and the end panels, lighter on the body, so the bag stands up by itself.

Finishing: clean piped edges and neat topstitching about 3 mm (1/8 inch) from the seam, instead of seams that are just turned.

Both steps work on a standard home sewing machine.

Look at the two duffles in the photo. Same colour, same idea. Which details do you spot?

👻 NEW THIS WEEK — Pattern #037: The BOO Bag

A ghost-shaped trick-or-treat bag. The mouth is the opening, the felt teeth stand into it, and the two arms lap over the head to make the handle. No zip. No hardware. Fully lined and turned through the mouth, so there isn't a single raw edge on the outside.

✔ Advanced Beginner
✔ One afternoon at the machine
✔ White cotton, a bold red lining, black and white felt — that's the whole supply list

Ten days to Halloween. If you want one on an arm on the 31st, this is the weekend.

This week's Pattern of the Week just dropped 🧵

A little lined trick-or-treat tote with scalloped wings, pointy ears and big felt eyes. Just in time for Halloween.

✔ Scalloped wings in the side seams
✔ Pointy ears in the band seam, felt appliqué eyes
✔ Boxed 2" (5 cm) base, fully lined
✔ Webbing handles

✂️ Why we often don’t include seam allowance in our bag patterns.

It’s not an oversight — it’s the method. Trace the actual pattern piece first, then add seam allowance directly onto the fabric. One more chance to check shape and measurements before you cut. 🧵

→ We work with 1 cm (approx. 0.4 in) seam allowance
→ If it’s already baked into the paper pattern, shifting while tracing becomes part of your final piece
→ Takes a little more time, gives precise results

The exception: our Weekly Free Patterns for Unlimited Members are computer-generated with written instructions — those DO include seam allowance.

There’s no single right way. This is simply the method we teach, and it works very well for us. ✨
