Hey friends 👋
Long post coming in.
We have had a huge increase in client requests for ⭐️dry wrapped round bales⭐️ for 2026. We do not generally have dry wrapped round bales on the menu ⭕️for horses⭕️ because they can be a very high risk for colic and illness. Cows 🐮 are a totally different story. We WILL wrap hay for cows all day long.
Here’s some of the logic from Chris:
🌱Horse hay needs to be as dry as possible, and any time you wrap hay you end up with some level of moisture getting in no matter how dry it is on the day it’s wrapped. ⬇️
🌱It can be wrapped dry and sealed perfectly, but if they’re stored outside and get rained on, the outer wrap getting wet will very likely produce some sweat and moisture inside bale, on the hay itself.
🌱Usually, this is limited to the outermost layer of the bale, but our thought is that even if the outer layer is all that gets damp and the inner layers stay dry, ⭕️the wrap prevents any airflow in or out⭕️ and therefore allows whatever mold/bacteria/crap develops from the sweat in the outer layer to fester inside the rest of it. That’s a huge risk. To us, anyway. We do not want to be held responsible for anybody’s babies getting sick.
🌱Just an FYI on top of it all, and not that this part matters to us, but wrapping anything is going to cost much more per bale ($10-15ish based on how many layers you want) due to the cost of wrap, the time it takes to wrap it, and cost of having a wrapper. It all adds up and it bears noting.
Will we consider doing it if our clients insist?
✅Maybe. If you feel strongly that you want some? Let us know. Let’s talk about it. You know your needs and your animals best, and we don’t want to suggest otherwise. At the end of the day, we’ll do our best to meet our clients’ needs.
We are finding that more and more folks are wanting to feed rounds, especially in turnout, because it’s such a convenient way to make sure your horses have free choice access to forage. But, the trade off is that they’re a b**** to store
and require a ton of space.
☂️Hay tarps, shelter logic, and storage containers, are a great idea for storage options without having to take on building something permanent and pricy. I also used to know an old farmer who stored them outside, on their side so the rain could run through them, and just peeled the outermost layer off before feeding to his horses.
Anyway. Just something to keep in mind!
