Amazing Spider-Man #9 from 1964 is a major early Spidey key featuring the origin and first appearance of Electro, also known as Max Dillon. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Electro became one of Spider-Man’s earliest major villains and would later join the original Sinister Six in Amazing Spider-Man Annual 1.

One of the coolest facts about this issue is how early it is in Spider-Man history. This came out less than two years after Spider-Man’s debut in Amazing Fantasy 15, when Marvel was still building his rogues gallery from the ground up. Electro was one of the first villains to prove that Spider-Man’s strength alone would not always be enough.

Fun fact: Max Dillon gains his powers after a freak electrical accident while working as a lineman, making him one of the classic science accident villains from Marvel’s early Silver Age. The cover by Steve Ditko is also a fan favorite, showing Spider-Man defeated at the bottom while Electro walks away victorious.

Tales to Astonish #27 is one of the most important pre superhero Marvel books ever published. This issue contains the first appearance of Henry Pym, years before he became Ant-Man, Giant-Man, Yellowjacket, and one of the founding Avengers.

One of the coolest facts about this book is that Henry Pym was not originally intended to become a superhero. Readers loved the character so much that Stan Lee and Jack Kirby brought him back just months later, reimagining him as Ant-Man in Tales to Astonish 35. Without this issue, there may never have been an Ant-Man at all.

Even tougher, this is a true Atlas era transition book from the months just before the Marvel Universe exploded with Fantastic Four, Hulk, Spider-Man, Thor, and the Avengers. Many collectors consider it one of the most historically important first appearances of the Silver Age.

Incredible Hulk #3 is one of the toughest books from Hulk’s original six issue series. This issue features the first appearances of the Ringmaster and the Circus of Crime, villains who would go on to battle not only the Hulk but Spider-Man, Daredevil, and other Marvel heroes for decades.

A cool piece of Hulk history is that this was published before the character became the green giant fans know today. Early Hulk stories were still experimenting with the character, making these first six issues some of the most important Marvel books of the Silver Age.

X-Men #3 features the first appearance of the Blob, one of the earliest villains in X-Men history. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Blob debuted in 1964 before Juggernaut, the Sentinels, and many of the franchise’s most famous adversaries.

This copy is even more special with an authenticated Stan Lee signature. Early signed X-Men keys from the Lee-Kirby era remain some of the most sought after Marvel books in the hobby.

The Hand of Fate #18 from 1953 is one of those books that hardcore Golden Age collectors get excited about immediately. Published by Ace Periodicals during the pre Code horror era, it features the wild supernatural storytelling and unforgettable cover art that made 1950s horror comics legendary.

What makes this copy especially significant is the pedigree designation. This book comes from the famous Northford pedigree, one of the hobby’s recognized pedigree collections. Pedigree books are prized because they originated from carefully preserved original owner collections, often surviving in far better condition than typical copies from the era.

The CGC label also notes that this issue was used in the Senate investigation on juvenile delinquency. That’s a huge piece of comic book history. In 1954, horror and crime comics were brought before the United States Senate during hearings that eventually led to the creation of the Comics Code Authority. Books like Hand of Fate were among the titles criticized for their shocking covers and mature themes.

Fun fact: many collectors refer to the books discussed during the Senate hearings as the “Dirty Dozen,” a small group of comics that became symbols of the entire anti comics movement. Because of that connection, surviving examples have become highly sought after by serious Golden Age and horror collectors.

This incredible CGC 7.0 pedigree copy with white pages belongs to and represents a fascinating intersection of comic book history, censorship history, and pre Code horror.
