Then vs Now Slideshow Style!

We went digging through some old photographs of life here at Pechmann Memorials recently and WOW have things come a long way in the last 40-50 years!

Most of the old photos shown here are from the 1980’s-1990’s. We’re still in the same location and same building as we were back then, just with a few modern updates.

This is an engraving technique called etching. Etching is done with a diamond bit tip that scratches the surface of the granite to create the desired design. As the bit scratches along the stone surface it is removing the polished layer of the stone, leaving behind a crisp whitened area. It’s a great way to capture the likeness of someone from a portrait or a more realistic representation of a landscape while still getting that engraved natural look. Since we can play with the pressure of the needle, we can create depth through the use of light and shadow to create the look of a more realized image, or even a more detailed flat image like this example.

We received a new shipment of stones recently, and here is a quick snapshot of what a couple hours of un-crating new stones looks like.

Each piece is carefully moved using proper handling and equipment to ensure the safety of both the stone handler and the stone. Once the pieces are uncrated, they are carefully inspected for any scratches, breaks or other mishaps that may have occurred during transport. We hold a very small tolerance for any stone blemishes, and this is so we are able to provide the best possible product to our customers. If the stone looks good and we have determined that no reworking of it is necessary, it will then be tagged for either inventory or shop production and put away.

Here’s the final results of the recent hand tooling work, starbursting, that we have been working on.

After completing the engraving and hand tooling, we mounted a 15” bronze statue of Mother Mary in the middle of the hand tooled area. This showcases just one of the many unique design possibilities we offer.

If you didn’t get the chance to see the in progress video of how starbursting is done, scroll back on our page to check it out, and don’t forget to click the follow button for more!

You may not see us out in the cemeteries this time of year, but that doesn’t mean we are slowing down.

We love to use the cold winter months to clean, organize, and do maintenance work around the shop. One of our big side projects this winter is rearranging the over 1000 monuments currently stocked in our warehouse.

This has been quite the undertaking! However, once complete it will allow us to more easily see, safely grab and move the pieces that we have in our inventory. It will also create wider and safer walkways for customer viewing, as well as make production more efficient when the warm busy days are here.

We often get asked if all the engraving work we do now is computerized, and often people are surprised when we say no. In fact most of the work we do in the shop is still done by hand.

We even do hand tooling work like you can see here. In fact, we are one of the only ones left in the area that still does any hand tooling work.

The one shown here is a technique called starbursting. It is done with a hammer and chisel breaking the stone in opposite directions leaving razor sharp arches in the form of rays.

Stay tuned to see the finished product and follow us for more behind the scene sneak peeks!
