As we prepare to close the store at 127 South Main Street, we at Antique Sweets would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to all of our loyal customers. We are incredibly humbled and constantly amazed at the outpouring of support you continue to show. This has been especially true over the last few weeks and months as you have expressed your disbelief, anger, and sadness regarding our current situation and the temporary shutdown that is now upon us.
So many of you have offered us your well-wishes and memories, and more than a few have offered us the use of your home kitchens, garages, yards, and outbuildings for us to prepare our candies. There is no greater comfort nor higher compliment that you could have provided during this time. We wish it was as easy as that, so we could take advantage of one of these offers, but moving a commercial kitchen space is not as easy as moving an office or normal retail space. There are federal and state guidelines that must be followed and inspections that must take place to ensure that we do not pose a public health risk before we can begin producing again. It is definitely not an easy task to relocate and comply with all these guidelines.
As with the fire six years ago that closed us for 8 months, this event provides us with the opportunity to rethink the future of Antique Sweets. We have agonized for 11 months trying to decide what to do. There have been many options considered and there are only two that have been completely removed as options: (1) we do not want to permanently close, (2) we do not want to operate Antique Sweets in any community other than this one.
When we opened 17.5 years ago, there was no way we could foresee how much you would bring us into your lives. You have allowed us to be a part of births, birthdays, graduations, marriages, funerals, and countless other celebrations that make this life worth living. We have had the joy of watching your children sit on our floor, counting their money to make sure they have enough to get their candy. We have had the even greater joy of being introduced to the children of those children who sat on our floor counting out their money. During this era of the pandemic, it is even more important and more comforting to look back at all of those moments with fondness and love.
Thank you so much for allowing us the privilege to be a part of your lives. Thank you so much for considering us a vital part of this community. We look forward to the day when we reopen our doors to you. In the meantime, we hope you have sweet days!
Regards,
Patty and Patrick
