How We Got Started;
We've been building furniture for years, and working to help others who are less fortunate or who are the victims of bad circumstances. In Detroit, we helped found the Architectural Warehouse of Detroit (www.aswdetroit.org) which focuses on training returning prisoners to do deconstruction, gaining crucial job skills that can help get people jobs so we can begin to reduce the
high rates of re-incarceration. Then three years ago, we began working with the Roosevelt Warm Springs Rehabilitation Institute. I first heard of Eleanor Roosevelt's "ValKill" there, and was intrigued not only by the story, but also by the principles upon which the company was founded. I did some checking and found out that the trademark had gone back to the "public domain" some years back, and even though the National Park Service continued to maintain the estate and the furniture that remained, no one had continued to build ValKill furniture. So, we are now hoping to work with the National Park Service to provide furniture for anyone who wants genuine ValKill pieces in their homes. The pieces we are manufacturing are not reproductions; they are originals built in 2014 and beyond. Each of our pieces will be stamped "ValKill", marking it as an official ValKill product. And in so doing, we will help to support the National Park Service in its efforts to preserve the legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt, one of America's greatest women.
