Val-Kill Furniture

Val-Kill Furniture ValKill Furniture was originally started by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1926 to build furniture and to assist youth.

How We Got Started;

We've been building furniture for years, and working to help others who are less fortunate or who are the victims of bad circumstances. In Detroit, we helped found the Architectural Warehouse of Detroit (www.aswdetroit.org) which focuses on training returning prisoners to do deconstruction, gaining crucial job skills that can help get people jobs so we can begin to reduce the

high rates of re-incarceration. Then three years ago, we began working with the Roosevelt Warm Springs Rehabilitation Institute. I first heard of Eleanor Roosevelt's "ValKill" there, and was intrigued not only by the story, but also by the principles upon which the company was founded. I did some checking and found out that the trademark had gone back to the "public domain" some years back, and even though the National Park Service continued to maintain the estate and the furniture that remained, no one had continued to build ValKill furniture. So, we are now hoping to work with the National Park Service to provide furniture for anyone who wants genuine ValKill pieces in their homes. The pieces we are manufacturing are not reproductions; they are originals built in 2014 and beyond. Each of our pieces will be stamped "ValKill", marking it as an official ValKill product. And in so doing, we will help to support the National Park Service in its efforts to preserve the legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt, one of America's greatest women.

First Friday, December 6 at the McEachern Gallery in Macon, my show “Progression” will present my design and furniture work going back to my roots, pre-Detroit, in Akron, Ohio. The pictures are a few of the pieces I will be displaying. You’re welcome to come by and take a look. For those of you who don’t know, first Friday every month is a big deal in Macon - all the galleries are open, and it’s just a fabulous night to explore.

To cover a gouge in a tabletop I am showing Simi how to inlay a piece of contrasting wood. This will end of being a nice design element in his table. I tend to leave knots and other natural markings in table, tops for interest in for aesthetics, but something like a gouge I like to cover up with a geometric shape of a contrasting wood. In this case were in laying a piece of cherry into a cypress table top. More later. PS. This was from yesterday‘s make up class. We typically meet on Thursdays, and there is a brand new overview class starting Wednesday, August 9 at 6 PM. Classes are $45 each, and we already have students signing up for the August 9 series. DM me - thanks…

Thanks to Miss Angela camp (Reconciliation House) for inviting me out to work with her group to create something from pallets. They disassembled the pallets, designed and built a cool nightstand (Aaron’s idea) all in three hours. We had a blast :-) great folks, great vibes;-) and the food was amazing as well!! Can’t wait to go back.

Join us this Thursday for our third class on furniture. Along the way, we’ve learned about tools, wood, some cool materials and several neat tricks. This Thursday, we will continue working on developing our skills and will start building a small table.
Shawn is pictured schooling us on how to properly put in 3” drywall screws. If you’ve never done it, it can be challenging. This stuff is not hard, but it is so freeing to realize you can do this for yourself. DM us or call us at Triangle Arts Macon.

field trip. A lot of woodworking has to do with materials you can use and where to find them. So Thursday we went to Home Depot and spent 2 hours looking at things you could use for furniture or home repair. Check out www.valkillfurniture/classes for more info. Do you know why you should NEVER use flat head screws? Also, screws come in brass, zinc, stainless steel, and galvanized. If you know the proper uses for each one, it makes it easier to select the correct fasteners for your project. That’s the kind of thing we learned today :-) join us next Thursday as we continue on skills practice and development.
