FluteWorks is entering into our next big chapter!!! Today I just signed a lease on a retail space in downtown Lynnwood right off 196th. It is a 15-minute walk from the light rail (I walked it myself) and right down the street from the Fred Meyer. We are about to go through a huge expansion with new employees, teaching studios, and space for more wonderful flute products! We expect to be moving in the fall, as the space isn't available for a few months and then we will have a little construction to do once we get the keys to the building. More information and a move-in date to come!

We couldn't have done this without the amazing expert advice of Heidi Ihde at Coldwell Banker Commercial Danforth. I tried several commercial realtors before her and they were all lack-luster, would take a week or more to return my emails or texts, and seemed disinterested. The first thing I liked about Heidi is that she was incredibly responsive. Every question I had was answered immediately and in depth. The wealth of her knowledge was evident from the beginning. She helped me find spaces, showed up to walk throughs, and told me the best negotiating approaches for the different spaces that caught our interest. Once we found the right space she transformed into a master negotiator. By this time, I had seen so many spaces and connected with so many landlords and agents that I was starting to let my emotions cloud my judgments. As my professional go-between she represented my interests in a cool and collected manner. She did everything she could to make this deal go through, which sometimes meant communicating my wishes to the landlord in a professional manner, and sometimes explaining the ins-and-outs of the commercial real-estate business to me so that I understood every detail of the process. If FluteWorks ever has to move again I will be coming back to Heidi. If you are about to undergo a commercial move, get Heidi on your side. You won’t regret it.

Handmade Flute Tech Wanted:
FluteWorks Seattle has some exciting opportunities coming up and we want a great flute technician to be a part of it!
We are the premier flute sales and service company in the Pacific Northwest. Our mission is to support all the flutists from beginners to the most important professionals in the country. We are a liberal come-as-you-are environment. We are supportive and understanding of our team members. We are musicians and family members. Every flute we touch is someone’s well-loved flute. Every flute should be treated as if it is your own. The makers of the flutes should be given the highest respect, and our goal should always be to maintain a flute the way it’s makers made the flute. We are open to new ideas that increase quality. We will be moving soon into a new commercial space where we will have room for more flute technicians. We have the wonderful problem of having too much work to do and not enough hands to do it with.
The ideal candidate will be a handmade flute technician with at least 3 years experience, and certifications in repair for both Straubinger and Muramatsu. While most of their time will be at the repair bench they will have a friendly personality and be happy to answer the phone and interact with customers from time-to-time. We are a very small shop, so every member of our team makes a huge impact! If they can start in time they will come with us to the National Flute Association Convention in Portland this August. Every flute should have a strong low B, and all fingerings should work perfectly. Flutes should play like the day it was made, and be beautiful when the work is done. Almost all of their work will be on handmade flutes and piccolos with the occasional intermediate instrument.
I encourage candidates who might lack one or two aspects of the ideal candidate to apply, as there aren’t a lot of handmade flute techs in the PNW. Training on the job is available to the right candidate. We might start a candidate with less experience on intermediate instruments and train them and certify them for handmade instruments. Business hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10am to 6pm, with some flexibility allowed. This position is for in-shop work.
After industry standard wait times the job includes 401k, sick time, personal time off, health and dental insurance, and a yearly education benefit of $1500. This education benefit could be used by technicians to get Straubinger and Muramatsu certification, take classes in soldering from a jewelry making class, or intern with other flute technicians.
The current location is in Lynnwood, WA, and when we move we will remain close to this area. Our goal for beginning the position is April 23rd, but we can be flexible with the start date for the right candidate.
Please send resumes to [email protected].
