Thursday May 29th, The Valley Lighthouse received the Neighborhood Hero Award from Millersburg Elementary School for their donation of drinks and snacks during the 2024-2025 school year.
In the past, teachers or parents had to supply snacks using personal money. At times there were few snacks to share. The Valley Lighthouse heard about the struggle and working with Midwest Food Bank was able to fill the need.
Principal Matthew Cowger thanked The Valley Lighthouse for their service to the school and presented them with a plaque and said, “This year our students didn’t go hungry.”
The Valley Lighthouse also provides snacks and drinks to the other four schools in our area: Upper Dauphin, Tri-Valley, Williams Valley and Halifax.
With school being out for the summer, they want to make sure that everyone knows that The Sharing Center at The Valley Lighthouse at 105 Main Street, Lykens, is open Monday – Thursday 10 AM- 3 PM for the community to stop in to pick up free food, clothing and household goods as needed
True story:
A young boy in one of our local school districts missed the bus. No other transportation was available. Rather than stay home, he chose to walk to school in the pouring rain. When he got to school, soaking wet, the staff asked him why he didn't just stay home for the day. He answered, “I’m hungry and knew there would be food at school.”
We are grateful to work with our community and for our community.
